might be the most baffling thing to happen at the movies... ever?

How in the holy fukk did this movie make so much money? It has Oscar buzz, but it's not even a longshot to win anything. It's like 70% on rotten tomatoes. There are copies all over the internet. It's a mid January release. The trailers show basically nothing (did everyone go just to see if he shoots that kid?) I don't thinl Chris Kyle's story is that well known.

I can't get over that box office. that's good for 40th all time. There have only been 40 movies in history to open for more money and almost all of them are what you'd expect. Did every single person over 50 go see this? I'm sure it cleaned up with the fat "murica" portion of the country, but 90 friggin million?!
1. Senilewood made it so it probably has that gritty western feel
2. it's sappy as fukk so the bytches are pleased
3. I would've saw it if Spielberg directed it

TYRONE GA!
“We went back for a few days to work with the Marines when they took down a hospital north of the city on the river. The insurgents were using the hospital as a gathering point. As the Marines came in, a teenager, I’d guess about fifteen, sixteen, appeared on the street and squared up with an AK-47 to fire at them. I dropped him. A minute or two later, an Iraqi woman came running up, saw him on the ground, and tore off her clothes. She was obviously his mother. I’d see the families of the insurgents display their grief, tear off clothes, even rub the blood on themselves. If you loved them, I thought, you should have kept them away from the war. You should have kept them from joining the insurgency. You let them try and kill us—what did you think would happen to them?”
Chris Kyle, American Sniper: Memorial Edition

:wow:

kinda hard to argue against that. :manny:

just watched it last night, i dont think it glorified war, clint did a great job showing the effects of anxiety and ptsd, with that said the movie was kind of depressing/dark and i prpbably wont ever watch it again.. bradley cooper was great.

Box Office Bradley :hulkblessed:
I've seen a bunch of people mention that he's a box office draw... he is at this point, don't get me wrong, but not opening weekend really.

He's been in the huge Hangover movies as part of an ensemble... He voiced a Rac00n in GotG... that piece of elephant dung American Hustle was an esemble, and i think it kinda rolled out into theatres... Silver Linings Playbook didn't open huge... Limitless didn't open huge... A Team, ensemble, based on existing property.

this is his first headlining huge opening, which was one of the reasons I asked HOW it did so well. no one could have expected that weekend

That original trailer was very, very well done. The one that goes back and forth between him making the decision whether to shoot and his family back home. That is one of the most effective trailers I have seen in a long time....getting tension like that in a trailer in this day and time with all the noise on TV and other trailers works....and not many movies have a plot line to do something like that.

People make these things too complicated. Either people watch a trailer and it makes them want to go to the movies, or it makes them wait for the Blu Ray, or it makes them wait to maybe see if it shows up on Netflix to.......eh...who cares.

Most people don't know this story....people on the thread can make all the "murica/red state" jokes you want, but that don't add up to a 90 million opening. All the stuff people post that the dude might have said or did say...nobody knows that stuff. They don't know about Ventura suing the widow or anything. That is the mistake people deep embedded in politics make on both sides of the aisle. All the real stuff about Obama that is questionable, or either Bush, or Clinton.....the people that know that are the people locked in to their positions. The average person in the country don't even know who the Leader of the House of Representatives ...whether it is Dem or Rep in any given year. And that is the 3rd in line for the presidency. Either that nutjob botox Pelosi, or that scumbag Boner. If a lot of people that watch Fox News and MSNBC on a random night combined went to see the movie that might add up to 10 million...maybe.

The point of all that is.......it looks like an interesting story, Bradley Cooper is becoming that guy, Clint Eastwood directed it, they had a killer trailer and no real competition. The people going to see it making a statement might have padded it a little, but there ain't no way in the word that adds up to 90 mill.

You can compare it to FURY.....but that didn't have the tension of that trailer.

Just like on Mad Men, or listen to some podcasts about some of the minor changes in ads or packaging that made some brand names take off....it really is amazing how odd it is.

That's part of the problem. They keep talking about what they are protecting but what are they really protecting? Rich white government officials? Corporate greed? What the fukk are they protecting? You ask ten soldiers why they are in Iraq or why they are in Afghanistan you will get ten different answers but they will all come back to "protecting America" and they don't know what the hell they are talking about. In their heart they have no idea why they are actually there.

Kyle was obviously one of these cowboys itching for a fight and what safer place to pick your battles then on the top of a rooftop aiming at women and children.
from kyle and other soldiers point of view thats what they think theyre doing. one of the other soldiers was becoming disillusioned and kyle asked him if he wanted to sit their mission out

Seth Rogen got in trouble for saying the movie reminded him of the Sniper movie "Nations Pride" in the third act of Inglorious Basterds.

This is the first thing that popped in my mind when I saw all the hype....Nations Pride.

This was actually a good move though, I think America is going to make Chris Kyle the new Johm Wayne or the new Clint Eastwood.
