Norway
The unemployment rate for foreign-born Norwegians is 9.2 percent, compared to a figure of 2.1 percent for the general population.

America
Unemployment among foreign born workers in May 2012 was 7.4 percent, while for native-born workers it was 8.0.

Again which country is friendlier to non natives? You guys just dont want to accept the facts. Im bringing data to the argument. Some of you just cant accept that Norway does not treat everyone the same like you fictionally believe the progressive societies are portrayed to be. Based on the numbers you are much more likely to be unemployed in Norway if you are foreign. In America you are stand the same chance to make something of yourself as anyone else. This is the critical test of what makes a country great IMO.

You are not addressing the lifestyle unemployed people live. Norway, Finland, and Sweden all have a welfare system that allows you to have an apartment, enroll your kid into school, buy a car, get insurance, and live a wholesome life while applying to several jobs. They also ensure that if you haven't found a job within 6 months they'll allocate you to free job training that prepares you for a "higher" status job instead of pushing you into low-end restaurant jobs.

The big difference is, Scandinavian countries WANT YOU to succeed, U.S.A. wants you to maintain...

I'm sorry but that's the awful truth.

At least five large studies in recent years have found the United States to be less mobile than comparable nations. A project led by Markus Jantti, an economist at a Swedish university, found that 42 percent of American men raised in the bottom fifth of incomes stay there as adults. That shows a level of persistent disadvantage much higher than in Denmark (25 percent) and Britain (30 percent) — a country famous for its class constraints.[13] Meanwhile, just 8 percent of American men at the bottom rose to the top fifth. That compares with 12 percent of the British and 14 percent of the Danes. Despite frequent references to the United States as a classless society, about 62 percent of Americans (male and female) raised in the top fifth of incomes stay in the top two-fifths, according to research by the Economic Mobility Project of the Pew Charitable Trusts. Similarly, 65 percent born in the bottom fifth stay in the bottom two-fifths.[4][14]

America is one of a handful countries in the world where any person born into poverty has the ability to become successful just off of the strength of his abilities, ideas, and drive. If you arent a success you can blame yourself. Thats what makes America the greatest country. Even Europe is not inclusive when it comes to immigration. Your ass will stay in the ghettos.

Sad you believe that...

You also contradict yourself by saying America is one of a handful and later stating this makes them the greatest...:why:

Wow.... Do some of you actually believe that USA is the greatest country to be in? Like really?

I'm from Sweden, and trust me I'm no patriot and actually couldn't care less about the country like that BUT I do realize that I live in a great walfare system. I just laugh at americans who point to our taxes and say that we pay too much without realizing that we got free health care, free school (yes, even college) etc. and if you don't have a job they'll try to put you back on the market and while you're applying you're granted money for applying for jobs etc.

Actually, we even get paid for going to school / college. During high-school we got roughly 150 dollars a month while in college I get 400 dollars a month :heh:

"Real Talk of NY" has been sold the American dream HARD. Are you one of those people living in that small bubble who believe New York is the greatest city in the world as well? I don't think it is, especially considering when the vast majority should really have no business living there since all the "amenities" are not really available to them. I was born and raised there, so any bs you come up with will be spotted.

Is it possible to make it? Sure is, in fact I might be lumped into that category myself considering where I came from. I wouldn't call myself "rich" or extremely successful tho (just comfortable)

I don't know why anyone is even entertaining dude, like someone said earlier, it's obvious dude is sold on the "American Dream" and you can't say anything to those people. Most people I know who sound off like dude haven't lived anywhere else or have never TRAVELLED period, yet they still believe America is the greatest country in the world :rudy: and I'm not denying that it is a good country in comparison to the countries of the world but there are other places in the world where you have the opportunity to be successful too and enjoy an even better quality of life. In America, they make you believe that YOU TOO can have all of these "things" (which most people are just trying to acquire anyway) by just working hard. And that's fine, okay, but they don't tell you about all the road blocks along the way. There opportunity is there, don't get me wrong but that's only if you slip through the cracks. Many, many don't.

Just one - education. How many Americans have degrees that cost them 50K-100K + and now they're in debt, trying to pay them back. But how? Jobs are scarce in today's market. And this is not just for people with degrees in liberal arts and shhht, I'm talking about my friends with degrees in engineering and life sciences. Very intelligent people who work hard and haven't been able to get lucky in the job market. But lets say you do get a job, you're working 40+ hours a week and 30-35% + of your income or more is going back into paying your student loan debt.

In comparison to some European countries where students in college receive up to 500 euros per month = $630. Not only that, they benefit from free transportation and a cap of 2,000 euros for their yearly college education (for some European countries). Imagine going into the job market with thousands you were able to stack while in school? How many people do you know are able to do that without their parents assistance in America? It's very possible but it's also extremely difficult with all the factors in place. This is just education, you're already behind when you come into the job market thousands of dollars in debt, a market that doesn't guarantee you anything (which you're basically taught to believe your whole life 'go to school, get an education, get a job'). I won't even get into the health care discussion

Man, there's just so much more to the picture btu we can save that for another thread. Point is, you can achieve a great quality of life in many places of the world. But again, most Americans don't know it. They HAVE to have that 3,000 square foot home (they can't afford), the new Range Rover, Benz, Beamer or Lexus (that they also can't afford), buying things from Best Buy, eating at Apple Bees every weekend, clubbing and popping bottles, while still paying your student loans and having access to limited healthcare But hey, it's America, :manny:

Me.

I truly believe that how successful you want to be is up to you. The road to success is different for everyone but if you're willing to be disciplined, dedicated and making the necessary sacrifices to achieve the level of success you hope to reach, you can do it.

Obviously, you have to be realistic with your goals but for the most part, I feel like achieving those goals come down to how hard you're willing to grind while maintaining discipline, dedication and sacrifices. But most people don't want to work hard. Most people want to sleep in all day. Most people would rather spend their money on things they can't afford, impressing people they don't like to appear as something they're truly not. They're not really about getting that money and being successful.

I'm on my way though and I feel like I'm on a good path so far. Only thing is, I can be lazy at times. But that's ME. I'm the one being lazy. And that's because I let some of the bullshyt life throws at you get in my way but when I do go hard and I maintain that level of consistency, I don't even know what I'm going to do :russ:

Work ethic is everything. If you have that, the sky's the limit. Most people are just waiting for someone else to do it for them, instead of really getting it themselves. My whole life, I've been able to get almost anything I've ever wanted. I've been able to achieve all the goals I really set out to achieve and I was able to do this through working hard. Making sacrifices. Being dedicated. Being disciplined. It's HARD AS FUKK to do it but you can do it, it's just up to you.

So you're saying everyone who is in poverty chooses to be there? :heh:

Really, I loved your spiel, it really makes me feel so empowered but it really isn't true. You can try hard and just flat out fail. And thats life. Someone always has to be on the bottom so you can enjoy the top. Not everyone can be millionaires or successful, thats not how capitalism works.
