this is a question ive asked myself ever since al went on the streak hes on now.because of the work hes put in, its prolly the cloest comparison between producers one could make right now.
When it comes to hip hop, Alchemist has held it the fukk down. he works with a better group of artists imo than madlib.and his early 2000s singles from nas to mobb, rae, etc etc etc are in a diff category all on their own compared to the recent swarm of releases which are all dope on their own.

I mean alchemist beasically works with heavyweight NYC artists originally and moved into the underground dudes like bronson n marciano who are poppin. because he generally works with better mcs than LIB i gotta give him his props; as that is just as important as beats imo. BUT... even though al got great albums like return of the mack, albert einstein; GREAT singles like hold you down and TONS of side tracks for seemingly every ncie hood artist in NY (as well as that west coast shyt hes on)... MADLIB/DOOM - MADVILLAIN is THE album between both of them. That shyt CERTIFIED dooms legend and made madlib a legend despite being essentially underground. and from the looks of it, the MADGIBBS album is gonna be fukkING FLAMES as thuggin is one of my fav songs in years from a new artist.
the biggest difference between the two is the instrumental albums. madlib certainly influenced alchemist with this. russian roullette smells like the beat konducta series.. Madlibs instrumental albums from the blue note shyt to random madlib invasions is what really sets them apart IMO. Beat konducta vol 1-2 is special to me. i remember seeing taht in fat beats on vinyl when i started college in manhattan and wow... i never looked back. I copped it off the strength that was madvillain and boy i never looked back. blue note album yesterdays new quintet, remixes... you cant even collect everything the man put together but it is one of the GREATEST catalogs from a hip hop producer ever... especially a hip hop producer doing instrumental albums.
If i had to choose...id go with madlib but alchemist is coming on strong. madlibs instrumental albums really set them apart though. Noone got better instrumental projects than madlib.. not dilla, not alchemist, not nobody. If al keeps it up though, who knows...
al got them hard banger shyts and lib got those smoooooooth bangers. you can go either way, but its a madlib invasuion boooy *queues spanish bells
