After rewatching The Wire, I think it's safe to say Stringer>Avon.

:mjlol: right
Snoop and Chris was running up on nikkas quizzing them on gogo music
The coop ain't want no problems with Marlo, on top of that the coop ain't have the muscle with all them Nikkas to handle New York, they had to try to hire instead of go at him, Marlo probably saw them as weak on top of weak after that

Back to OP, Stringer could never survive the rigors of street life nor the treachery of politics. He had no respect from the business folks Clay was involved nor did Avon's crew really respect him (they did out of loyalty to Avon).

So true.

I figure Avon and Stringer linked up when Avon was young and ran with him before Avon was boxing trying to get the golden gloves and was not part of the family business yet. Stringer probably knew Avon for a good while which is the reason why Stringer felt comfortable telling him he had D'Angelo killed, Avon should have killed him after that can't believe Avon still trusted him after that. Letting Stringer live too long got Avon snitched on.

Stringer probably another D'Angelo that jumped in the game because of the fast life and fast money, this is why Avon did not mind schooling D'Angelo cause he was used to schooling folks like Stringer and the shooters on his payroll.

Stringer dumb ass did not think to wonder where Orlando got the buy money Avon had to school him on that.

And Stringer telling Avon he has asked Brother Mouzone who shot him and Avon said "whhhhyyyy" was too classic and Stringer has to schooled once again.

The jail scene and the look on Stringer face was classic when Avon hesitated to give him the fist bump through the glass.

Time and time again Stringer was making dumb decisions, and Avon had to remind him he never killed anyone. Wee-Bay should have been Avon's #2 man instead of this minister of defense.

Yep

The Co-Op was the only reason New York got ran out of the city when Stringer died and Avon went to jail

They allowed Marlo into the fold, but they were initially just going to knock him off. New York was just the bigger issue at the time

Marlo was smarter than people like to give him credit for. It wasn't just luck

what marlo had over everyone else was that he was utterly ruthless

You know what's crazy about stringer. He could have pulled it off. He wasn't dumb. He was prideful

You know when he finally realized he fukked up. When that Jew lawyer told him the whole scam. Then he says "why didn't you come to me first"

At the party Marlo was at, he had the same lawyer and was told "don't ever talk to them without me there"

Had stringer simply went to the lawyer first, this shyt would have been deaded from jump and levy would have told them all to make real deals.

Stringer took his little class and figured he was smarter than everyone else. He thought he was smarter than Avon, mouzone, Omar, levy, Davis, Marlo. All of them. Like Avon said "they saw your ass coming a mile away"
man idk why Stringer didnt consult Levy

if he had imagine how different things wouldve ended up

maybe but Avon's muscle is what got them there in the first place. Plus if he wouldn't have been playing games with Mouzone he wouldn't have gotten murked in the first place. AND if he didn't snitch on Avon they were about to clap Marlo up quick

what marlo had over everyone else was that he was utterly ruthless

In the article David Simon wrote when he was journalist which inspired all three of his TV shows, he described three era of hustlers.

First era would be the Bumpy Johnson/Frank Lucas type of huslter which represents the old flabby sick ones like Prop Joe. It was all business.

Second era would be the Pappy Mason/Preacher/Supreme hustlers similar to Avon. They were more resourceful.

And the third era of hustlers like BMF who were ultra violent and not into the politics of the game which represents Marlo.

Second and third era hustlers beefing is the source of violence. The 1st and 2nd era gangsta could live side by side, but the 3rd era of gangstas were ruthless.

Avon wasn't going to lose and he was able to see Marlo miles away.

This is why the 1st era gangstas were food to Marlo, but Avon had Marlo ran off the corners and just wholesaling. Remember Avon said he was starting to have respect for the younging.

I gotta put Avon over Stringer, Avon knew the game too well.

Stringer would've made a horrible kingpin

He got fukked over by clay Davis and it seemed like everyone knew but him

He was a smooth smart/dumb n*gga
nah he was easily smarter than the rest of his gang, not the wisest though ig you get me

Stringer was too confident and he miscalculated himself at the end, I don't say that he was the more honest character but definitely one who tried to see the bigger picture. He just couldn't make that final jump into the white collar world cause he bet on the wrong horse and he got outplayed. but by no mean he was dumb
Clay Davis screwing you not necessarily means you're dumb... Clay Davis is one of the smartest, slimiest characters in the show... :yeshrug: Watch his trial scene again and you tell me

that was the point

the DA and stringer were in way over their heads, respectively. both were incompetent.

Avon and Marlo knew what Stringer didn't about the game. It's illegal and savage, therefore cannot be played on the up and up or like a legal rational business.
That's not true

Big dogs in real life do exactly that. They lunch legal business on the fundaments of illegal drug/weapon/human trafficking/extortion/etc... money
They convert into businessmen, into white collar criminals.
You won't see an Italian crime boss who's just hanging around the streets counting drug money and that's it... If a criminal organization is ambitious it tries to expand instead of focusing only on illegal money. They invest in real estate, constructions or anything what they can corrupt... :yeshrug:
If they are more ambitious and they want to be more than just a street gang they start to build connections with "important people", politicans and such...

Stringer tried to do this exact same thing but he miscalculated himself plus Avon was an oldschool guy with an old honor codex and he just wanted this thing to remains a street gang relying on drug money... :manny:
