Family Fortunes by Bill Bonner.

He talks about how the Rothschilds held on to their financial dynasty for over 200 years.

He talks about how a Japanese family held on to wealth for 1400 years!

He also discusses how families lose wealth. I can see this happening to the Walton family soon. It will be a sad American tale.

The Walton Family losing wealthy will be a sad American tale :deadmanny:

The best thing for African Americans to do is "Get a culture of thrift" (racist stereotypes in full swing) and study the outlier billionaire families in history :dead:

1. He says without a strong matriarch AT HOME tending to the children, you aren't likely to raise productive and emotionally healthy adults. The man should work, ideally. Someone HAS to stay at home.
- Most black children are being raised by 1 parent and that one parent doesn't have the time to pay attention to the diverse needs of the children as they grow.

2. Human Capital - "It is the matriarch who builds the family. She develops its human capital. This is the family's most valuable resource. A family with members who are capable of building and preserving wealth will always be able to rebuild if something goes wrong."
- We lack human capital as a race. We have to stop depending on government schools only to educate black kids, most urban schools do a poor job. The education establishment isn't likely to equally educate black kids to eventually compete with white kids in the workplace.

3. Family Culture - a set of beliefs, a mission, a history, holidays, traditions and celebrations. Families need a common narrative about who they are, where they come from, and what they are doing.
- This goes back to what you were saying about our lacking a cultural bond. I had to go ask my father to tell me about our family history and he went :heh: This is what we MUST CHANGE in our community.

4. Family Values - thrift, frugality, underconsumption, delayed gratification are necessary values to hold on to wealth.
- We lack all of the above in the black community. We don't want to be cheap. We want to buy Jordans and Jerseys.

5. Family Business, family hobbies, education goals, marriage standards, family motto and crest, family traditions and rituals, family properties, family investments, family constitution, fighting addictions and troublesome behavior, etc.

We lack everything and we don't even know it. The government WILL NOT help you gain any of the above. It must be a part of your CULTURE.

1. Completely disagree (at least about the part where women need to stay at home). We need more kids with both parents...but with both parents working. This isn't 1950, women work and you really need two incomes (in most cases) to have a decent standard of living. So it's best if both parents are bringing in money (and more likely they can afford to live in a decent area and save for college).

2. Vague

3. Meh. I think people are individuals, there's no need for all black people to have the same beliefs. If anything there's TOO much groupthink in the black community.

4. Well, if you mean less materialism, I completely agree. Way too many black people obsessed with clothes and cars.

5. Vague.

The biggest problem black people have (IMO) is an anti-intellectual culture. Too many black kids want to be athletes or entertainers, not enough want to be engineers. Nyggas coming out of college getting less respect that nyggas coming out of jail. Until we get to a point where having an education and career is seen as "normal" for a black person, we'll have problems. This isn't something a political party can fix though.

All that family values stuff is kind of secondary and not really the main issue.

The fact that that is the only thing you have focused on is why we have so much farther to go.

I rather benchmark families that do well than model those that do poorly or average.

Black people lack some of these basics that other cultures and other races value.

I am trying to go through this marriage thread, b/c this is clearly an area where we don't value it whereas other races value marriage and monogamy and they excel.

You cannot grow a strong community when 1 man is split between 3 households or none at all. This is ridiculous. Call it what you want, but this has to stop. Call it stereotyping, but many statistics back this up.

Sorry friend but those are racial stereotypes that I will not accept in a serious discussion. Furthermore, not only are those things that I bolded not true, if they were "reversed" they would not lead to economic prosperity. There are various schools of economic thought both on the left and right which acknowledge that it is POLICY not CULTURE which drives economic development both internationally and on the local level. It is only this strange far right culture based quasi-religious which seems to permeate among many black posters. A holier than though attitude indeed, without any tangible evidence to support not only the reality but the conclusions.

I disagree with it being secondary.

Who will teach these kids to value an education over a criminality? The family.
Who will raise them to have higher expectations? The family.
Who will encourage them when it gets tough? The family.
Who will help them get there? The family.

I read somewhere that the reason gangs proliferated in the inner city is because the members were searching for family, protection, belonging, help, etc.

We need strong families. We tend to have very dysfunctional families and we suffer for it. Strong families can foster an environment of success and achievement. I can only think of where this has worked in sports or music - Tiger Woods, Williams Sisters, Beyonce, Michael Jackson.

Very true. I just got finished reading a book on passing down family wealth. He says that weak family structures is what causes bitter fights over inheritances.

I'm looking at my family and we are lacking in a number of these departments, even though we aren't rich...yet.

A lot of this is what is wrong in our community.

You gotta forgive him, he's a marxist, he just put down his wrinkled copy of the communist manifesto and is insulted and appalled that you would try to define yourself as anything other than a member of the proletariat and would try to learn lessons from capitalists

I didn't necessarily agree, with the part about a two parent household or a women remaining at home in general. If it works, than it works.

The main proposition to take away is, the strong family household, with a set of instilled morals. This inherently is what "I" believe many black households tend to lack; or America in general. The lack of instilled morals actually transcends throughout social demographics. I have black friends who grew in affluent black households, where both parents were professionals yielding in a "substantially" high, above average household incomes, yet their kids still never became sh*t; ended up dropping out of high school, because they didn't pressure them enough on academics. But bought them the latest phones, clothes, shoes, cars, etc....

3. Meh. I think people are individuals, there's no need for all black people to have the same beliefs. If anything there's TOO much groupthink in the black community.
True that, in modern day context there is no "quote on quote", "black agenda". But there are numerous cultures in America, where certain, ethnic groups tend to look out for each. (Jewish people, Armenian people etc..)They almost like an angelic brotherly bond. Meanwhile, in America, a young black male worst enemy, is another young black male :snoop:

4. Well, if you mean less materialism, I completely agree. Way too many black people obsessed with clothes and cars.

Brother Twism always preaches on this, remember this cat wears cheap payless sandals to work...

How's the family issue not important. The family instills values. :mindblown:
The parents should be the first line of defense at deterring negative behavior. Not fostering it...
