People tend to forget that between 'One In A Million' and 'Aaliyah' she took like a five year hiatus (exception of Are You That Somebody), which for most acts at the time (or any time really) would have been a career killer. But people really missed her, and she pretty much picked up where she was in popularity and was only destined to get bigger before her tragic death.

She had the records.

R kelly/timbaland/Missy laced her career with undeniable song writing and production. songs like back and fourth, One in a million, 4 page letter, at your best and then to go out with Rock the boat:damn:

Those records would be outta here with any pretty face. Not going to act like AALIYAH was immensely vocally talented but her music resonated in a way people would die for.

Yeah she wasn't an exceptional singer but she was getting better every album. But its annoying how the coli couldn't even go a page without getting disrespectful again. That Star Search performance at the end was when she was just 10 years old and that was pretty great. At 10 years old she was singing better than some of these "stars" today especially someone like SZA.

Yep hall of fame producers and songwriters for all three albums. AANBAN(R Kelly), OIAM(Missy and Tim) Aaliyah Album and singles in between(Static Major)

Personally I think before Aaliyah's last album that in her performances she was holding back and wasn't fully going in because like someone else said she was an excellent dancer. People forget that MJ and Beyonce are rare cases and that it is very rare to be able to sing great and dance great at the same time. Even besides that though she said in early interviews how she considers her music to have a jazzy feel which i'm assuming is her favorite style so she was singing based on that often...that 90s smooth jazz Sade vibe. If someone ain't singing like Whitney or Mariah to alot of people they try to disrespect them too much.

Even if she had the benefit of great songwriters and producers you still have to be able to EMOTE and connect well with those songs and I wouldn't be quite quick to say that anybody would have gotten those songs the same popularity.

The Sade/Aaliyah playlist that poster is going to is so appropriate because both had the same laidback chill vibe. Sade I will say gets more of a pass for being a "maestro" with writing her songs but she also benefited from great production also. Its all about how you connect in the music. I respect what Aaliyah did more than these singers who just chase singles

I remember it differently

You coli cats live in an alternate reality. These lies could never have me triggered.

LOL @ Aaliyah not being "that big" when she was alive...BUT this is the same Aaliyah that was beating out prime Britney Spears for awards and charting #1 records from just airplay.

FOH, fakkit.

Yeah I don't get those people she was huge at the time and crossing over in the mainstream and all over red carpets at that time and doing photoshoots with Justin Timberlake. While still being super respected in the black community.

Her death got more attention on BET and urban media than Left Eye did the following year and Left Eye was apart of the biggest R&B group ever TLC. I mean what does that tell you? People forget this but my memory is very good. Left Eye was the biggest in the group meaning if T-Boz or Chilli died, Aaliyah would still have gotten a bigger reaction. Again....the biggest Pop group.

She had 1 number 1 hit for one week :mjlol:

stop the revisionist history and acting like she was some world beater at the top of r&b, she wasn't :umad:

#1 hits aren't the only barometer for success dummy. Look at Nicki Minaj never having a #1 and how long has she been around? People know her crazy ass worldwide still though. Stop going off #1 hits especially when the 90s had so much competition and she still was making alot of noise.

simply put she was selling swagg

her popularity was centered around her character & energy

like what rih is today

iconic it's more than music

I've been on record saying that I see certain similarities with Aaliyah and RIh but I gotta disagree about the swag part. Aaliyah had alot of swag AND the music to go with it that has aged WELL and will continue to age well, whereas I can see Rih having certain songs age well but can't see whole bodies of work/albums aging well like they did with Aaliyah.

I think Rih is the one who has the focus centered more on the character and energy than the music.

I just thought it was a pretty cool seeing them together. :manny: This was also around the time that I actually liked Beyonce too.
No doubt but this is what is about to occur anytime someone post this video in a thread so I am just warning you.

i agree babygirl definitely had a better balance between music & her iconography

rih musical catalog is underrated nah it's not as legendary as aaliyah's but she's got cuts & it's not just the singles
