Report: Kaepernick looking for $18 million per year

As it turns out, coach Jim Harbaugh is a bargain in comparison to quarterbackColin Kaepernick.

At a time when it’s believed that Harbaugh hopes to increase his annual salary from $5 million to $6.5 million in 2014, Kaepernick hopes to end in a much higher spot. While starting in a much lower one.

Due to earn $973,000 this year, Kaepernick reportedly is looking for $18 million per year as part of a long-term deal, according to Ben Volin of the Boston Globe.

That would put Kaepernick in the same ballpark as Bears quarterback Jay Cutler and Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo, and slightly ahead of Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford, who averages $17.6 million per year.

It’s also considerably more than Patriots quarterbackTom Brady’s current $14.1 million per year deal, which nevertheless kicked off in 2013 with a $30 million signing bonus.

The question for the 49ers is whether to take the Joe Flacco approach or the Matt Ryan approach. In 2012, the Ravens opted to let Flacco finish his rookie contract, and he did so with a Super Bowl MVP trophy. It backed the Ravens into a corner, forcing them to choose between making him the highest-paid quarterback in the league or starting down a year-to-year path under the exclusive franchise tag that would have given him more than $80 million in three years.

In 2013, the Falcons opted to pay Matt Ryan before he completed the final year of his rookie deal and backed the team into the same corner, forcing Atlanta to break the bank even bigger in early 2014. Despite the team’s unexpectedly bad season, the Falcons still would have been faced with a dilemma between using the non-exclusive franchise tag (and risking a pilfering by another team happy to give up two first-round picks) and applying the exclusive version of the tag.

Kaepernick arguably hasn’t played enough games (he has only 23 regular-season starts) to justify the kind of money he wants. Also, given his mobile playing style, the 49ers will assume a greater injury risk upon giving Kaepernick long-term security.

With new team president Paraag Marathe, an analytics aficionado, recently explaining at the MIT Sloan Sports Analytics Conference that advanced statistics “absolutely play a big role” in contract negotiations, the sample size is still too small to pay Kaepernick at or near the top of the market.

“Both sides in a contract negotiation, both sides are using analytics and data to help support — it’s confirmation bias to the max, everybody’s trying to find evidence that supports whatever theory or contract demand they want to make,” Marathe said, via Mike Rodak of ESPN.com. “They can cut it and slice it in a lot of ways that help you.”

Two stats can slice apart the legend of Colin Kaepernick. As explained in the latest edition of ESPN The Magazine, Kaepernick had a league-worst 54.6 completion percentage while under pressure. He also was sacked 20.2 percent of the time when facing pressure, the fourth highest average among all NFL starters.

Then there’s the question of whether Kaepernick’s success comes more from his innate abilities or from the highly talented team that surrounds him. And whether any other coach can get out of Kaepernick the production that Harbaugh has — especially once the postseason rolls around and Kaepernick seems to find a higher level of play.

With the Harbaugh situation potentially imploding after 2014, it’s probably a good idea to wait to pay Kaepernick the kind of money he’s looking for. If he has another strong season, the number won’t get much higher in 2015. If Kaepernick struggles, it could become a lot cheaper to keep him.

I knew it would be around that much...ESPECIALLY after the cap rose $10 million and is rumored to get to $150 Million by 2016.

NFL Network is saying that he wants more than Cutler got ($18.2 million).

I was telling nikkaz that the Cutler deal is what Kaep was going to look at. This is the problem with these mega contracts. Every QB who has accomplished more will want to get paid more than a guy like Cutler. I don't blame Kaep for wanting that but I don't blame the 9ers for not wanting to pay it. That's a lot of money for a guy who is still undeveloped (as much as I like him...he still has some work to do.

On a brighter note. We gettin Quan back? :wow::wow::wow:

I don't know about that kinda money for a QB. I might be in the @yseJ frame of mind if he's asking for that much. He can go play in Minnesota or something. At some point one of these teams is gonna draw the line at paying ransoms for QBs

good to see quan resigned. as for kaep...i would hate to lose him, but if he wants more than 18 mill than 9ers might just have to draft a qb this year and develop him. i rather invest that money in defense and oline before a qb.

if the 9ers land revis...:banderas:

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.co...s-act-has-worn-thin-in-the-49ers-locker-room/

At this rate, 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh’s infamous “who’s got it better than us?” victory cry eventually may become a “who hasn’t got it better than us?” lament.

With most of the last nine days devoted to a dissection of the dysfunction between Harbaugh and 49ers G.M. Trent Baalke, Ann Killion of theSan Francisco Chronicle identifies a new front in the organizational battlefield.

“One source with inside knowledge of the team says that Harbaugh’s act has worn thin in the locker room,” Killion writes, “particularly among some key ‘face of the 49ers’ type players. While the team is winning, that’s not a problem. But a few losses could expose a widening rift.”

No specific players are mentioned, but the obvious candidates are linebackerPatrick Willis, defensive lineman Justin Smith, running back Frank Gore, receiver Michael Crabtree, tight end Vernon Davis, and/or quarterback Colin Kaepernick.

Speaking of the team’s hot-and-cold franchise quarterback, another source explained to Killion that there’s no real link between the Harbaugh-Baalke disconnect and the team’s inability to return to the Super Bowl this past season. “‘If Jim and Trent have a beer together, it’s not going to make Kap throw the ball four inches higher,’” the source said, referring to the intercepted pass from Kaepernick to Crabtree at the end of the most recent NFC title game, the second straight year that the failure of quarterback and receiver to deliver in crunch time ended a postseason run.

As a result, the shelf-life between Harbaugh and Baalke possibly mirrors the shelf life between Harbaugh and his players. If, as Killion points out, adversity arrives and stays, it could all implode.

Some think that, if the 49ers give Harbaugh the contract he covets, all will be well. There’s also a chance it could get worse, right away or in time.

“That’s just who Jim is,” a team source told Killion. “He’d probably like to redo his contract every year, just out of competition.”

At it’s core, that’s really the issue. Jim Harbaugh is intensely competitive.

“Jim is the greatest pure competitor, by far, that I ever met in my life,” Ravens coach John Harbaugh told Sports Illustrated in 2010. “At everything.”

Jim Harbaugh competes with everyone, about anything. It has made him wildly successful during his first three seasons as an NFL head coach, with three straight NFC title game appearances. But it could make this coming season his last one in San Francisco.

And then his competitive nature will be welcomed gladly by any of the various teams that would love to go to only one conference title game.

i wouldnt be surprised if he walks away after his contract is up. jim comes off as a guy who gets bored easily and is constantly looking for a new challenge.
