Debbie wants Colt all to herself. She never got any grief counseling after she lost her husband, and Colt is now her husband.
This is a common situation with single mothers. They never let their sons grow up, because the son becomes their other half. Him being an only child is another factor. If she had other kids, especially a daughter, she would have other people to occupy her time.
