GM foods kept off the menu at Westminster

The House of Commons is continuing to bar genetically modified food from its restaurants and cafés, despite a drive by ministers for the technology to be more widely accepted.

Owen Paterson, the Environment Secretary, this week launched a British move to try to persuade the European Union to relax restrictions on the cultivation of GM crops and allay public fears over so-called “Frankenfoods”.

Advocates of GM crops say they increase yields and produce more food. Critics say the technology remains unproven and could threaten human health and the ecosystem.

In a controversial intervention this week, Mr Paterson suggested people “thwarting” GM cultivation are putting lives at risk.

Despite his argument – which is backed by David Cameron – the House of Commons is upholding a policy of rejecting GM ingredients served in the Palace of Westminster.

However, the Commons insisted that banning GM, which was put in place in 1998, was not about health fears, but simply reflected “customer choice”.

“The House of Commons Catering Service avoids, wherever identifiable, the procurement of foods that contain genetically modified organisms,” the service said.

“To this end, as part of the tendering process, food suppliers are required to work to a strict GM organisms policy and give assurances that goods supplied be free from genetically modified materials.” It added: “The decision to avoid GMs is seen as largely a matter of customer choice.”

The Commons’ resistance to GM foods has come to light a day after Downing Street refused to say if the Prime Minister and his family would happily consumer food including GM ingredients.

Mr Paterson today acknowledged that his argument for more use of GM technology faces stiff resistance because of deep public scepticism.

He wants EU regulators to approve a long list of new GM crops, including herbicide-tolerant maize and sugar beet.

Current rules mean that only when other European nations accept the case for GM will it be possible for Britain to use the crops more widely, he told the ConservativeHome website.

He said: “I have to work closely the whole time with various allies, but it is a typical issue where there are terribly strong feelings in some member states. The last poll I saw in Germany 98 per cent of people are opposed to GM, so you have to really respect that.”

Mr Paterson’s outspoken argument for GM technology has angered some campaigners and worried politicians who agree with him but fear his combative approach will be counterproductive.

Lady Parminter, the Lib Dem spokeswoman for food, the environment and rural affairs in the House of Lords, said Mr Paterson runs the risk of being seen as “cheerleading for the GM industry”.

First of all, try to make at least 70% of your diet organic/all natural.

GREAT THINGS TO EAT TO STAY RELATIVELY HEALTHY. I don't eat red or white meat(still eat fish and dairy), but I'll cover ya'll anyway.

NO ORDER OR CATEGORIES

1. Kale
2. Spinach
3. Carrots
4. Beans(especially black beans, chick peas, lentils, etc)
4. Salmon
5. Egg Whites(WE GOTTA CUT IT OUT WITH THE YOLK. LET IT BE A RARE)
6. Greek Yogurt
7. Hemp Seeds
8. Oatmeal
9. Cream of Wheat
10. Almonds
11.Organic All Natural Almond Butter
12.Organic all natural brands of veggie burgers("meat" or "chicken" varieties)
13.Quinoa(130x healthier than rice)
14.Avocado
15.Sweet Potato
16.Broccoli
17.Almond Milk
18.Apple Cider Vinegar(mix with cold water)
19. RAW/NATURAL HONEY! SUBSTITUTE MOST YOUR SUGARS WITH IT!
20.Soursopp
21.Blueberries
22.Bananas
23.Tangerines
24.Grapes(better than Raisins. Raisins being dried are much higher in calories)
25.All natural almond cheese
26.Cottage Cheese(no pineapples or processed BS. all natural preferably). Mix with fruit for better taste.

27. Try to stop eating bread as much as possible. I've eliminated it almost completely from my diet with the exception of the rare cheat meal burger or sandwich. I usually eat my burgers with no bun.

28. WATER

29. Flax seed!
30. Chicken Breast!
31. Seitan!
32. Tofu!
33. Occasionally cheat meals to treat your hard work and new food lifestyle. Optional of course, but I see nothing wrong with a cheat meal once a week(if already fit), or once every 2-4 weeks if you're still working towards a goal like myself. My next epic cheat weekend will be a large hand made pizza from whole foods - half plain, half olives and red peppers, 5 pounds of haribo pink grapefruit candy, a pack of organic oreos(whole foods. you'll never eat regular oreos again), and a big ass bag of organic totrilla chips with all natural ranch hummus :ahh: :ahh: :ahh: can't wait. 10 more pounds to go! Try and make your junk food "healthy" junk food with natural ingredients.

Some of you may be frowning and crying at this list, but give it a chance. With good recipes and seasonings, you can whip up some delicious stuff. Don't continually feed your body poison. Take care of it. It's the only one you'll ever have.
