I find it kind of hilarious that people are just now discovering Shingo through this year's G1 when he's been killing it for something like 12 or 13 years in Dragon Gate.

G1's always good for introductions to old standbys.

You know cats don't always branch out to other feds, right? Some dudes don't check for ROH, Impact, NWA, etc.

Dragon Gate seems to have the least following online for some reason. They're the second biggest company in Japan but they're very walled off from the rest of puro.

The lariats :picard:

The trash-talking :leon:

The welts and bleeding :whoo:

Shingo/Ishii didn't disappoint. Sucks cause I want Ishii to still be alive on the final day but at least we get the rematch for the NEVER belt, it better be at WK and not Destruction nor Power Struggle.

Nothing wrong with that, just making a point.

Probably because Dragon Gate's presentation, relationship with the rest of the puro landscape, and fanbase has historically been out of step with most other feds. As long as I've known about them, Dragon Gate has always kind of been it's own thing.

Let's not act like even old puro fans were going crazy for Shingo's work in Dragon Gate. Only legit hardcore DG stans like @The Rainmaker knew what was up with him regularly.

I mean, most of us were happy as fukk seeing Shingo freelance last year in All Japan in Big Japan because we don't check out DG and he's always awesome so it was a dope chance of seeing him face off against new people in new settings...which is exactly what he's been doing in New Japan :manny:

Yup, and it's weird because they basically own the prototypical style that most of the online fanbase LOVES. Like, we all love DDT because of the blend of fukkery, comedy and sometimes legit good wrestling, so it getting a western fanbase makes sense. But DG? I've never figured out why it didn't catch on. Even more so when every time any wrestler from DG works elsewhere, people love them.

I mean, I couldn't keep up because I was burned out of the style incredibly quickly, but that's not the case with the majority of the IWC, so why it never caught on will always be a mystery to me.

I don't get why they aren't more popular. Is the flashier, faster style? The heavy emphasis on storylines and stable dynamics instead of workrate? The fact they aren't more open to work with other local companies? All of that?

DG definitively has an audience (Korakuen shows are always full, unlike NOAH ones), and yet that "most popular puro wrestlers" poll I posted a while a go showed the most popular DG wrestlers are the ones that aren't with the company anymore (STRONGHEARTS). It's the weirdest thing, like a cult following.

Also find strange the stable/unit dynamics haven't catch on with fans. Those usually create higher stakes at big shows (Who's gonna betray, who's gonna join, who's gonna get kicked out, etc.), and it's more interesting than the STALE AS FUKK stable roster from NJ.

Yeah, if the style doesn't burn you out, there are not a lot of reasons to not like Dragon Gate or at least giving them a fair chance.

And as it has been said, they are a niche product (not sure it's the right word to use in this case, but I can't come up with another one) even in Japan, even that fanbase is completely separated from the rest of the industry, which is really weird. Specially from that country were you have places like DDT fitting right in with traditional companies. How the hell does the 2nd biggest promotion for almost a decade - not sure they still are though, but then again who the hell else is n°2? - not have major presence in awards, polls and articles in Japan?

To be honest I'm surprised guys like Alan4L, who championed DG for a LONG ass time, never really did a good piece about it or at least attempted to understand/explain the weird case of DG.
