I've been thinking about some career opportunities on the horizon. I'm in the big data space and returned to a company I used to work for in a sales engineer role. With the whole AI stuff going on right now I'm in a good place to learn more and propel my career. My boss also is a brother. Dude looks out for me and he is sort of mentoring me on thr political side of my career, navigating tech as a black man.

Recently I had a former colleague of mine contact me from a competitor asking me to go through an interview process for a role with them.

Pros of jumping ship: higher salary, more focused account, good opportunity on a newer piece of technology

Cons: possibly burning a bridge with a great asset in my boss, taking my career in a slightly different direction.

I could probably make the salary I desire in a year and a half or so, but in this market it's hard not to be a mercenary and look out for number one. I also am relatively new to the sales engineer path so someone grooming me and having a STRONG vested interested in me may be worth more than the short term monetary benefit...especially since he's experienced in the ai space which well take off. Thoughts.
Honestly if your boss has your back like that I'd run it by him as a hypothetical. For some of the people I mentored that worked under me I helped them leave my company to position themselves better for the future.

I'd probably stay put because of the bolded, hard to come by for a lot of us

What would the new role be?
It would still be a sales engineer but a bit more technical because it's a specialized account.

I tend to lean towards the former because it's nice to have someone looking out for you in your career and helping you avoid pitfalls. My first role as a sales engineer I ran into a manager that wasn't looking out for me. I don't want to jump ship and deal with the same thing.

I got out the military a few years ago, got into IT then early last year a sys admin role. Its been cool and all but one of the guys is a jackass. He talks the most so he runs point on most projects, divvies up the work etc but we have a shared manager.

Problem is he be spazzing out at times, disrespecting another guy on the team when we're on calls etc. shyt is getting old but the money is good. Its a white dude whos almost 60. And im the most junior person so i damn near gotta act like Chicken George or Radio at times. im planning on getting another role in the fall/winter of this year but this mf here making it difficult at times to just clock in and work

My manager said I’ll be getting promoted the next cycle (April 25).

I should have been in the cycle for Nov 24 but our team had a re-org and the new leader wanted to get a read on the team first. However, the new leader said he likes that I have a very strong attention to detail and was supportive of my promotion.

Still should have gotten this promotion about 2.5 years in the role but I’ll take a Senior Manager title with the 15% increase.

If you told me I’d get this far in terms of title and salary before 30 like seven years ago I’d think you’re pulling a fast one.

Honestly this just has me wanting to grind harder. Praise the Lord.

At my job, there were layoffs in November and the exec assistant for the CEO was laid off last week.

There’s rumors of more layoffs coming at the end of the month. My teammates are saying that the IT team is safe, but that doesn’t make me feel much better
I’ve been carefully applying for jobs, but I think my current job title sells me short in relation to what I do. It’s “IT Support Tech”, but I also work on projects like Okta and mdm.

I’d prefer if the next company I work at was big enough that the ceo doesn’t know who I am.

Why wouldn't you considering giving yourself a slightly better title if your work reasonably aligns with that better title?

Are you working with APIs, app integrations, SCIM, etc. in Okta?

Creating device policies or pushing out scripts in jamf/Intune?

Sounds like a system administrator or an IT engineer to me.

Should I just change my title on my resume? Some people say not to do that because of background checks.

My main work is dealing with support requests via Slack. I hate doing the low level support.

I’ve been working on adding apps to Okta, but only because I go out of my way to look into what apps aren’t set up yet. The job is Mac only and we use Jamf. I’ve also been messing around with the API on my own

One of my upcoming projects is to re-do our zero touch setup in Jamf.

At my last job, I set up Kandji and Okta from scratch. At the job before that I set up Jamf from scratch.

I think everyone has to consider what risks they won't take. For me, I wouldn't lie about working at a company, the dates I was there, and my experience/skills.

But I would consider changing my title especially if the titles are believably close in responsibilities. IT Support Tech and a system administrator aren't that far apart to me.

I see it as a low risk way to improve your prospects especially if you have the experience with more advanced tasks and you can speak confidently about it in a technical interview.

When I've gone through background checks, I had to fill out forms separately from my application/resume. That meant I could change the title on my resume and correct on the background check just in case.

This is what I'm talking about. If you can speak with a hiring manager about your experience with identity management and zero touch, they shouldn't have a problem believing you're currently a system administrator.
