I think right now in Cybersecurity every company is offering the same salary ranges. I've never gotten a job through a regular recruiter. So I only use them to figure out what's the going rate in a particular industry. Otherwise companies will base their offer on what you make currently.

LinkedIn has gotten me my last two job roles mainly because I apply through the LinkedIn site. When applying directly through a company website I get ignored. But someone is always looking at their Corporate LinkedIn page.

These companies then turn around and have me fill out my application on their website. But only after I damn near have the job in the bag. And this is like the 2nd or 3rd company in a row that's done this. Maybe it's just easier for them to navigate LinkedIn internally or something. But I rarely hear anything back when applying directly on a Corporate website. So I just stopped doing it unless they require it. Plus it's much quicker than the Corporate website which is like 30 pages long.

I used to be a contractor for my current company (employee now) and almost all contractor positions were through recruiting firms. And even if there were interviews it was after the potential contractor was referred to the company. For applying on the website, that was pretty much a farce for at least my department. The managers already knew who they wanted from the contractors that were there or if they were referred by someone else. They had interviews for the open positions but pretty sure it was for show. When they finally talked me into coming internal they told me exactly when to apply on the website and pretty much fast tracked the entire process from that point.

I wish I had a central focus like cybersecurity. That would probably improve, yet complicate my life at the same time; streamlined job search, but competing against a larger pool of applicants. Because I'm trying to find my groove in the "Data" space, I use the job description along with the salary to determine the overall worthiness. The bold has typically been my experience. I remember one woman asking me to fill out their company app, BEFORE the interview, but it was hella long and she already had my linkedin and copy of my resume. I wasn't filling that company application out without even a preliminary convo. :manny:

For some strange reason, people STILL sleep on LinkedIn. My girl doesn't even have one and she's about to finish up her nursing degree and start job searching.

LinkedIn is one of the main reasons I got put on where I'm at now [Healthcare Data Analyst]. It's also how I met someone in the industry on the mentor tip. Hooked up with this Systems Engineer who started out as a Analyst and he gave me everything from resume advice to programs to download and learn to make myself more attractable.

Plus, I get hit up at least once or twice of week just off the strength of where I work and having my certs in my profile, etc.
What kind of things did you do to your profile?

I met some guy that was trying to break into Data Science. But he was trying to break in via Finance. While I've only seen Data Science jobs in the Utility Industry.

Yeah there is a huge distinction between data analysis and data science. Analysis coupled with some sort of visualization, can be found in multiple industries, but data science from my understanding is more about examining customer behavior to improve services or experiences, therefore not applicable to some areas of business.

LinkedIn is still a great tool, but lately it’s becoming more Facebook-ish with people posting irrelevant shyt and discussion topics that have nothing to do with career and networking.

I hate working for UK companies. These fools have no lives.

I'm glad to be working but I want to take advantage of companies hiring Blacks in C-level positions. It's only been about 6 months but I might brush up the resume.

I've narrowed down what I want to do...today anyway. I've decided to go the project management route, based on the roles and job descriptions I've been viewing that appears to be the best route for what I feel I'm good at. I could also finesse that into my own business at some point.

gotta set yourself up for success, i know i'm not ready for that role professionally nor where i am personally :yeshrug:

The best quote I've heard on Grey's Anatomy, "The best time to have kids is never... you are never going to be ready and it's never the right time."

Sounds like the same with this situation.
