if i do go the help desk route, i'm gonna have to get two of those to make ends meet.
going from the government into that position is basically half of what i make now slashed away...

...i gotta tighten up my networking.

What salary are you targeting? For me, that helps narrow down which options I want to pursue. I saw you mention security analyst,so maybe try looking for Junior level positions to get your foot in the door, emphasizing your certification is pending completion. While it's admirable in some aspect, I hate to be "over credentialed", where I'm learning a bunch of stuff and then trying to find a way to get paid to to know it. I want to get paid for what I know and then increase knowledge to get paid more.

so...i thought maybe i'm not allocating enough RAM for the VM, pushed it to 4096 or something like that. My shyt was slower than dial-up, had to force restart my MBP :mjlol:

I'm determined to figure this out on my own :snoop: :russ:
I got to. How can I aspire to become a security analyst and can't install a vm :snoop:
I can't remember if you mentioned what distro you're trying to spin, but if it's out of the box Ubuntu, grab hold of that L you're taking and try spinning Lubuntu instead. It's more lightweight so you can allocate less resources. My work laptop came with 16GB of RAM and I could barely spin up a serviceable Ubuntu. OOM almost every time I tried to resume it.

Also, did you mount the iso on the drive ? Because if you didn't :francis:...

Will do.

I know you've probably mentioned it before, but what field are you in now and what's not working out, if you don't mind me asking? I like the data/visualization path I'm on, but I think I'll always struggle with company culture/politics, so ultimately I know I need to build something of my own. Preferably, I'd like to wait until I'm more solid financially. I want to "have fun" with it, not be stressed about paying bills and stuff like that. Even if I never start my own company, at least I know I can yield a "decent" salary.
I went through the normal progression most people make in IT starting at the helpdesk before moving up. But to accomplish this I had to switch jobs. Because it's rare to even get promotions in IT at most companies.

I was recently hired as a Cybersecurity Engineer but job titles are meaningless except in really huge organizations. Smaller companies tend to plug you in anywhere your needed. So I'll probably go back to a much larger organization with clear separation of duties. And where you truly specialize and focus on 1 or 2 areas. Instead of being a jack-of-all trades and master of none. Those types of jobs are the worse and one of the main reasons people don't reach their full potential.

I feel you! What you described has been mostly my experience, but I lucked up on a helpdesk job for ADP (the payroll folks) but supporting a reporting product they had at the time. That lead to landing a Jr. Business Analyst job and been on the analysis/data track ever since. Even still, I've managed to touch aspects of development (reporting, dashboards, front end), project management and general analysis. Then each discipline has it's own certification or educational track, which is my I went with getting a Masters. Educationally it combined everything and that's why I'm going to pimp it into my next move.

Just did a finance check up (savings, 401k, debt, etc).

Looks good so far. Staying at home has allowed me cut back on eating out and petrol for my car. Been using the savings to aggressively pay off my car note. Plan to have it done by the end of the year.

Also spent last week going through my various subscriptions and I don't use and cancelling them (gym, magazines, etc). By the end of this year I should be in a very very good place with finances.

When is the exam date again? I say get that shyt over with. Even if you fail, at least you know what the test consists of and know which areas you need to focus on.

Yea just take it now. There's definitely a good feeling knowing you got it out the way, even if you don't do so well. You can always take it again later.
