Only pennies made prior to 1982 have high copper levels to count as sellable copper. Those were 95 percent copper. Now the pennies are mostly zinc.


I only know this because I saw dollar signs when thinking about trading pennies as copper.


So if you want to sort through pennies and find the pre 1982 pennies, those can be worth more than their currency value to sell to penny hoarders, but it’s illegal to melt pennies for copper.

The math works out like:

100 pennies in a dollar. 50,000,000 pennies in $500K ($500K * 100 = ). Each penny is about ~0.09 oz.

4.5 million ounces in $500K of pennies (50 million in pennies * 0.09). Divide 4.5 million oz by 16oz to get the figure in lbs = 281,250 lbs which translates to 140 tons.

An African elephant weighs like 10,000 lbs so the weight of these pennies would be like 28 elephants.

I'm still taking the pennies though. Shouldn't take you more than a week to turn that into cash. Even if you spent 20% of the $500K in carrying costs and cash conversion, you'd still be left with $400K. Anyone taking $50K is just lazy or a fool, or both

The bank didn't seem to bothered by it almost like they liked the publicity. $5,136 in pennies fit in 15 water jugs.

One reason I voted for the pennies is because I remember a story a preacher once told about when he was building his church. He used to collect quarters and he brought all of his quarters to the bank in water jugs. The bank was caught off guard but they got it all counted and deposited in one day.

I think if some of these dudes saying take the cash would stop thinking about it like you would normally roll in the bank and walk up to the teller to make a deposit. Businesses have a accounts to and large coin deposits aren't something that they won't have a plan for.

Edit: I figure $500k in pennies = 1460 water jugs. I would do 10 a day over the course of a year.

Yeah you would need a crew of 4/5 to even attempt at doing it successfully. The answer isn’t cut and dry. Once you break everybody off, transporting fees, service fees and the hours of labor and time it wouldnt look as lucrative
