First I remember reading that info in the police report a year or so ago. Just now I couldn't find direct receipts other than the wikipedia entry for the trial where it states

"His mother recalled that upon returning home that night, he looking "disheveled" with his clothes torn. Lewis claimed he had been mugged by a group of men, although there was no evidence of such an attack, and a police report was never filed. The next day, August 3, Lewis's father, a former school principal, took him to a local emergency room for treatment of scratches and cuts on Lewis's upper body."

Secondly to your question about skin and blood. That is usually what they mean by DNA, what do you think they test the skin and blood for?

If the conviction is vacated, or if he's ever found not guilty at a new trial, NYPD will never work on this case again. They'll just insist it was him and that they couldn't prove it beyond a reasonable doubt. Defense/PI/independent investigators will be the only ones who might found out what really happened, unless someone who knows the real story decides to talk.
