I think a large swath of white people did leave the Dems because of racial resentment. I also think you have to factor in how bad the 1970s was for people as the country started deindustrialization, Japan and South Korea manufactured goods better and cheaper than Americans and OPEC became a force causing an energy crisis.Whites abandoned the Dems because due to racial resentment. The Dems chose neoliberalism starting with Jimmy Carter’s presidency.
And despite that, the opening was there as Barack Hussein Obama won a large chunk of working class whites votes back in 2008 and Bernie was winning them in ‘16 and ‘20.
