This is the ironic thing about the identity politics debate. You for sure have a good amount of leftists that let their race, orientation, other specific identity drive a lot of their decisions but I feel like leftists view politicians as vessels to deliver on policy. This is why so many leftists eat their own over disagrements.
Centrists put more focus on the identity of their politcians/opposition. Hilary did it with the Im With Her stuff and lost (for many reasons not just this). Biden and Kamala learned from that mistake and decided to focus on Trump being a horrible human being who will have dire consequences on our society as we know it. In a rational society it works but theres nothing rational about American society. If the current batch of Dem leadership haven't figured out the triggers that push people to Trumpism then heads need to roll and fresh perspectives need a chance
Part of this is the media class/professional/intellectual class who have their own murky motives

Biden finally gives the speech Democrats have been waiting for" and I remember thinking who the fukk was waiting for this speech, as far as swing state voters and low/average information voters?
Remember in summer 2022, the hearings about January 6th? Big in media circles. On MSNBC. On CNN. My Dad was riveted. and I followed it in the NY Times, for sure, but does the average worker in San Diego or Michigan understand ANY of that shyt? No. They don't even know what a Senate committee hearing is. and why should they? it's all just performance.
a lot of this is just how each person takes in Trump's performance. Some are into it. Some are willing to forgive this or that. Some are very committed to the idea that it is not racist or sexist, or horrible or degrading or whatever. And a lot of the blind spots have been in Democratic leaders ASSUMING people will think the way they do. Abortion, same thing. They are assuming women across the board, across states, across demographics, are going to support total pro life policies and they fukking do not. I could have told them that.
