The argument for Kawhi is that he was the clear best player on a team that was ahead of the Lakers all year.

The arguments against Kawhi are basically what you said - he's statistically inferior, doesn't run the offense like Bron does, and coasted on defense all year so he wasn't even better than Bron in that category.
