I think the exact same mechanisms would be deployed regardless of how he chose to title himself. They called Obama a Socialist and do the same for Biden. One was pre-Bernie hype, one is post...they're going through a similar pattern across the board from the impending interim losses to centrists being the ones bombing the party while progressives take the blame.
