I hope Black Panther does well but I'm highly skeptical. Coogler isn't nominated. It has no other major award nominations, none for acting, none for screenplay. This looks to me like a "we nominated your movie, so you can shut up" classic move from the committee.

There are some simple minds like @WakandanPride who don't see it :ehh:

Bohemian Rhapsody being nominated for Best Picture is interesting. Critics did not like it very much at all. I read that it was actually "Rotten" for a while on RT and then crept over 60% more recently.

Something is going on here. It won Best Picture for comedy/musical at the Globes. People in that thread said it was ridiculous and had no shot of being nominated at the Oscars but here we are.

I've heard Malek was great. I have not seen the movie. All I know is someone is lying :mjpls:

My predictions.

BEST PICTURE: Green Book (don't know why but this movie is beloved by people who hand out awards)

BEST DIRECTOR: Spike Lee (this will be the make-up award for not giving it to him for Malcolm X)

BEST ACTRESS: Lady Gaga (it will make the award seem hip to honor her)

BEST ACTOR: Christian Bale (the academy loves physical transformations plus Bale killed this role)

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS: Amy Adams (she's been nominated a hundred times without a win so I think this year is her time)

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR: Mahershala Ali (like I said that damn movie is loved by these weird ass awards voters for some reason)

BEST FOREIGN LANGUAGE FILM: Roma (I don't think the Academy is ready to give the best picture award to a Netflix movie but doing it heere will still allow them to seem progressive on the changing way films are being delivered to the masses)

BEST DOCUMENTARY: RBG (A timely subject and the fact that Bader-Ginsburg might be dead by the time the show airs makes me think her doc will get the win)

BEST ANIMATED FEATURE FILM: Isle of Dogs (The Academy loves pretension and Wes Anderson which means they get to indulge in both of those loves in a category that they usually don't get to...it's like marshmallows in their hot cocoa)

Black Panther will have its best shots at winning an award in costume Design, Production Design and Best Original Song.

Toni Collette and Viola Davis got robbed.

Here’s what I don’t like about the “we nominated your movie so you can shut up” theory: only one movie can win. There are no co winners. So movies getting nominated is a big deal. Regardless of the movie. But only one can win it all anyway so in truth, they’re all just along for the ride at that point.

Disney and marvel ran a great campaign for a movie that became a huge cultural deal. It may not win but that doesn’t mean the movie that does win is wack and black panther should’ve gotten it.

I still haven't seen Green Book so I can't speak on it. I know what I THINK it is lol but I don't want to talk out my ass about it. But I do love Mahershala and I don't think any of the controversy will stop him from getting his. Maybe the other categories it gets shut out but people seem to genuinely love dude and it helps he's on True Detective right now.
In the first 20 minutes there is a horribly acted, cliche as hell scene of a bunch of Hollywood casting department Italians saying racist shyt about a couple of black handymen while watching a baseball game. I almost tapped out right there from all the cringe and shyt didn't get much better as the movie went on.
Mahershala Ali gave a really good performance despite all the bullshyt that the movie was.
Viggo Mortensen seemed like a dude who just started acting the day before he got cast. He was fukking dreadful.

Because the people in the academy aren’t critics. The actors producers directors writers etc etc don’t always go by critical reception. They go by what’s in front of them, what’s easy to see lol, what they hear about in the news, and often, the impressions they get from the campaign. It’s a weird outdated system but it is the system.

All you have to do is read one of those articles that magazines put out every year around this time of Oscar voters and their thought process for why they voted the way they did.
The majority of them vote based on media hype, personal feelings for a person nominated, how they felt the studio pushed a specific nom and their own weird political leanings.

Breh you and I have seen enough Oscars to know that a movie nominated for Best Picture if it has any shot of winning is usually going to be followed by other major awards. That's why I'm skeptical of it. Same goes for Spike's joint.

They aren't critics but over the course of film history most often critical reception and Academy Award voting is in sync. This is not typically what happens. There are many critics who said that this movie is outright trash. I don't particular care for what critics say, as you know. But this has to be pointed out because it's against the norm.

But that’s not the point I’m making. Normally a movie with the best shot gets nods in technical categories and black panther has that. It’s got 8 nominations. that’s a lot breh. That’s not just “oh we’re happy to be here” especially when Roma and The Favourite got 11. It’s got the second most nods. Not saying it will happen but it COULD win best pic even without a best director nod of any actors.

But even that said, that’s not the point I was making at all.

What’s that Tom Hanks movie that got nominated when everyone wanted the dark knight? That got lambasted by critics and still got a nod. It’s happened before. It’ll happen again. Movie isnt going to win lol but it is what it is on that front
