But that’s not the point I’m making. Normally a movie with the best shot gets nods in technical categories and black panther has that. It’s got 8 nominations. that’s a lot breh. That’s not just “oh we’re happy to be here” especially when Roma and The Favourite got 11. It’s got the second most nods. Not saying it will happen but it COULD win best pic even without a best director nod of any actors.

I'll say this much. I did not see that it was nominated for Production Design. That gives me a little more hope in the matter. Still.. no Coogler and no adapated Screenplay, I don't like the odds

What’s that Tom Hanks movie that got nominated when everyone wanted the dark knight? That got lambasted by critics and still got a nod. It’s happened before. It’ll happen again. Movie isnt going to win lol but it is what it is on that front

I think you are thinking of The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. That's a Brad Pitt joint. It's not bad but it ain't good either. The Dark Knight was a success story though because first Heath Ledger won an Oscar for his performance but also the reason why there are more than 5 pictures nominated for Best Picture now is because The Dark Knight got snubbed. So it opened doors in that regard.

Few thoughts:

Black Panther getting the nod is a big deal. Not sure if it'll win but that's huge. Wish Coogler got a best director nod but it's got enough technical nods where it has a real shot at winning best picture. May not be a huge shot but its got a shot.

Props to Spike for finally getting a best director nod. John David Washington should've gotten a best actor nod. But Bale is getting that award so it doesn't matter

The Original Score category is tough. Those are all dope scores. 2018 was a good year for music in film

The movie ultimately says the girl who goes out and explores and lives and has sex is going to be punished with an STD. It’s typical baby boomer messaging and such a hangover from Reagan’s America

She didn't just explore. She did hard drugs and almost killed herself. She lived a very destructive lifestyle and had a fall back plan with Forrest.

Those noms underline just how bad 2018 was/is moviewise. Yeah, The Oscars aren't end all be all when it comes to movies but still. So far I've haven't seen a single movie I'd give above 8 out of 10.
