WWE didn’t tell the whole story on those contracts. Vince had the option to buy the contracts off Time Warner but felt that what they were being paid wasnt worth it. If he had bought those contracts they would have been contractually obligated to appear on WWE television ASAP. They weren’t even long term contracts, almost all of them expired within the next 6 months.

Booker T opted out of his WCW contract to get beat up by Stone Cold every week for less money

Think about that, Vince threw all of that money into the XFL but wouldn’t pay Goldberg & Sting for 6 months to run the greatest angle of all time.
Jr expounded on this though they would have been making more than many of the top wwf guys and they didn't want to create that locker room dynamic.

XFL ceased operations about a month and a half after they purchased WCW and Vince supposedly lost about $40 million from the XFL I'm sure at that point, with the talent they had on the roster already and the talent they initially inherited from WCW and ECW, they wanted to see what they had first (at a cheaper price) before breaking the emergency glass to sign Hogan/Hall/Nash/Goldberg/Steiner

Jamie Kellner hated pro wrestling so much that he sold WCW for peanuts so he could turn TNT into a scripted dramatic TV show destination like HBO that just ended up being shows like The Closer and Rizzoli & Isles. :stopitslime:

He almost cancelled Freakazoid and Animaniacs so he basically ruined my childhood.

Edit: Also cancelled
