But go back and look at the drafts. 3 of the players on your list came straight out of high school. Shaq could’ve come out after his sophomore year. Most of the 90’s drafts were doo doo. TMac and Kobe were drafted low. Bobby Hurley was picked 7th the year he came out.

The way GM’s evaluated talent was different. Everything revolved around the front court. To put the lack of talent into perspective, Charlie Ward was drafted in the first round and basketball wasn’t even his first choice.

Most players stayed longer in college because the NCAA’s meant more, the players were treated like rock stars and a lot of them knew they weren’t good enough anyway so why leave early.

To be fair Bobby Hurley was in a horrific car crash.

Old useless vets don’t allow situations like what’s going on in Memphis to happen.
A lot of you all really don’t remember the NBA in the 90s and early aughts to make a statement like this.

I was literally just thinking this. The only way to offset this is to expand rosters and add more teams. As someone said, a situation like the Grizzlies doesn’t happen if there are more vets in that locker room.

The youth boom is a natural progression but it would benefit the league overall to have more vets available.
The Jailblazers could've used veteran leadership... oh wait

Thankfully the Portland Jailblazers had the following vets so there is no way they could get in trouble.

How did Antawn Jamison's veteran leadership prevent Gilbert Arenas from bringing a gun into the locker room?

It didn’t unfortunately. Sure, veteran presence isn’t a cure all but a lack of it doesn’t exactly make things any better.

And with the Jailblazers mention that’s only two examples, if that’s all people can come up with then how does that disprove the point?

What is the list of teams derailed by lack of veteran leadership?

Above the fray.
Not sure why so much animosity towards older players. Did you guys play organized team sports of any kind?

If a team is serious about contending, having a vet who went through playoff situations and high pressure scenarios is a bonus for your team. Benefit from having him on the team.

I noticed this too. Steph and KD are among the oldest players in the league in their mid 30s.

It seems like this is happening in all sports, not as many people sticking around to 40 anymore.
