Was instant classic to me when I saw it in theaters, in September 2001, right after 9/11. I remember buying the DVD the day it came out too. The scene with Jake and the surenos was such a great example of creating tension and confusion, and anyone who's been around enough has had those moments, you can tell some shyt isn't right, but everyone is just smiling and offering you drinks…You don't know exactly whats up, but somethings off, and you want to think it's all good, and you know better…..Anyway, I never liked the very end, very cliche and over the top, for a movie that was gritty and authentic in most regards, besides Andre Young's acting debut..

cliffnotes i noticed this time around
why did his first bust have to be locking up some snow homies just coppin some trees smh
Lonzo had jake smoking in the middle of the fukkin intersection tho damn

its breaking my heart knowing what they bout to do to Rodger tho smh

i think that was just an easy way to get some dust as well as seeing how honest Jake was in that type of situation, chek him out because Alonzo already knew he was gonna hit Rodger that day and he knew he was getting a rookie that could take the fall for killing Rodger. Zo been setting this whole day up for a long time, only thing he didn't count on was the Russians coming for him because of shyt in Vegas.

I remember reading somewhere they were about to make a sequel. With Jake turning into the big bad "wolf".......

I remember reading something like that too.

I also read they were thinking about doing a prequel which was going to showcase how Alonzo became who he was and how he got into that funk with the Russians.

When I first seen the movie I knew it was good but I didn't think they would nominate Denzel for an Oscar for it. And after he got nominated I didn't think he would win. But when he won I went..

But then upon thinking about it...it had to take Denzel playing a slave and a crooked cop to get that award..

But Malcolm X and Hurricane....

But overall this movie is still a classic :myman:

Y'all should listen to Antoine Fuqua's commentary during the movie..adds more depth to the story that will leave you like :ohhh:

most people see the Oscar as one of those "he should have won it before" and this performance was great, good enough to be nominated. he really should have won for Malcolm IMO but you know the Oscar people aren't going to give an award for that.

:whew: glad they were able to get Hawke.
Ryan Phillippe the only one out of those named that I would consider.

Having Paul Walker or Freddie Prinze would've turned that shyt into a comedy. They're barely actors.

Ryan Phillipe doesn't fit the tone for me though.

Tobey Maguire would've definitely been an interesting choice and no doubt a career defining moment had he done the role and the movie justice. Most people only know him as spider-man now though which is kinda sad.

I think Hawke was definitely the right choice.

U mustve not seen it for a while...remember they killed ol boy and took the money he had stashed under the floor?alonzo just made a judgement call and knew Jake didnt really have the stomach for the job and was too honest....left him for the mexicans to ice em.
Yep.. Jake was the only detective that wasn't down for all the side snake sh*t. He was a straight and narrow by the book cop. Alonzo felt that dude was gonna rat him and his crew out. Those other detectives(Dr. Dre and company) were literally Alonzo's gang/crew. Alonzo thought Jake was down with they life but he found out he wasn't. He seen to much so Zo had to have him merked.

-Its crazy how that whole movie took place in one day.. I love the scene at the end of the film where Jake is wearily walking up to his front doorsteps like, "wtf just happend- what did I get myself into" type sh*t.:banderas:

-bout to pop this in and watch it all over again just off the strength of this thread :noah:

Now i gotta pop it in again...cuz im trying to remember if jake did or said anything after alonzos crew killed ol boy for the money:patrice:....cuz im sitting here thinkin, did alonzo want to really keep jake on board?i remember him giving a speech to dr dre and them saying jake was his guy.

But was he basically in agreeance with them at that moment that jake needed to die too?and he only didnt do it bcuz there wasnt enuff time ?or it was too risky that jake might shoot him first.

Just wondering at what moment he actually decided it was a wrap for Jake...if he was deciding jake needed to die at the same time he was telling his own crew jake was his guy and was gonna live....cold shyt:myman:
