A lot of black women have short hair because they were taught the wrong ways to take care of it when they were younger. Frying it and putting tons of chemicals in it their whole lives. My sister has pretty long hair, going down to her mid back because she takes care of it now. My grandmother had a ton of hair when she was young as did my mom.

To me it is,..and it reminds me of the notion of how black culture is more revered/respected when its NOT coming from black people...

White chick gets dreads/braids= people are like...oh how cool...she's hot
Black chick gets dreads/braids= "I feel like she smells like patchouli and weed" "how ghetto"

White chick twerks= oh that's art, that's hot...let's make millions off of this and make work out classes off of this
Black chick twerks= disgusting ghetto culture, go back to section 8 housing, black wedlock birth rate references.

It pisses me off cause they act like we didn't even come up with the shyt...we do the work...they take all the credit at the end of the day.

I see why people don't like white folk and their "culture" man beyond the obvious history of cruelty, oppression, torment, marginalization, rewriting of history, etc...if it wasn't for people of color, they wouldnt have anything resembling a culture.

Yea it's not even subtle anymore and I believe there is nothing that's insignificant.

You can't hold an entire race accountable for the actions of a few, but those actions do have implications that affect every member of that race in a much broader way.

*If I may derail my own thread* I was all for rushing the legalization of marijuana till I got hit with some facts :patrice:Blacks are like 4 times more likely to be brought up on charges relating to marijuana offenses when blacks and white use at the same rate. Some of the biggest trap houses are run by highschoolers in the flurriest of white suburb neighborhood yet it's predominately black brothers and sisters going away on a bid for some stupid shyt :what:

Why is that a problem for legalization? All the black people that been selling weed in jail n sht while the white people out free still selling sht, working on business plans, and ready to flip the sht when it becomes legal, thus creating another industry where blacks are virtually locked out of :damn: Nikkas need retroactive benefits when the shyt becomes legal:to:

Anyway, back to the thread. Nikkas wanna be us, so we up. But they got the means to cut us out the equation. So even when we winnin we aint winnin :sadcam:

Real talk the model they featured who alleges she's part black is actually 0% black. Fiji is not in Africa. So officially the magazine recruited a 0% black person and tried to claim her as black, rather than any of the billions of blacks in the world. These cacs are so devious. :dead:

shorty...it's all dreads...whether it's knotted up or not....what are "marley twists" supose to look like? who is named after? what kind of hairstyle does he have?
I just posted what they look like. It's a hair texture.

What do you mean it's all dreads? You mean the texture?
My hair is just like Marley hair. I've never heard of people calling loose hair dreads. I mean unless it was twisted or someone was trying to loc their hair.

See, black hair and styling are a part of our culture as much as hijabs are to Muslims and turbans are to Sikhs. They have meaning and aren't just a trend or costume but because they come from black folks people have no respect to our intellectual and cultural property. White folks think that our culture is everyone's culture.
I'd take it one step further and say that white people think that the culture of people of color is everyone's culture.

I was in Bushwick yesterday on my laptop and grabbing a bite to eat at this cafe and I see this white chick with an indian bindi on her forehead...why? I don't know.
I've been seeing white women wearing saari's and hiijabs...why? I don't know.
There's now a new trend of taking japanese and chinese text and characters and putting it on t-shirts and random clothing cause it looks cool. Even though when translated in english it doesn't make a lick of sense at all.
Musically, whites been jacking black music for ages and even newer music that comes from the black community (juke, jersey club, vogue house/ballroom) and spanish communities (reggaeton/moombahton) seems to not be able to gain any traction unless it's co-opted by white people.

And ofcourse...:banderas:

Weave is just a covering/addition. People wear weave for different reasons.

I feel like a lot of black women see weave/hair as an addition to their wardrobe, just like clothes. They can switch up their style and color and some feel naked without it.

Now on the other hand, if you have highly textured hair like me (kinky/nappy/coily) you need protective styles. Your hair doesn't have to be covered, it just needs to remain stretched and requires low manipulation for growth. Which is why we wear cornrows, braids, twists and locs. Weave can be added for length, color or as a protective/decorative covering.

I think because white culture is co-opted by everyone to a degree. We wear suits to work, english is an international language, classical music is regard as the standard etc.. But white people don't understand that they are the dominate culture already so they don't understand how appropriating other cultures is deemed offensive.
