Well, the reason I ask is because when I see people argue the legitimacy of BTC one of the things they highlight is that more and more retailers are taking it as a form of payment. But is anyone spending BTC at this point? And most of the alt coins don't seem to have any mainstream penetration as far as currency use is concerned. So now my question is two fold; the value of BTC as a currency compared to speculative tool (buying an iPhone X, for example, with BTC would be a fraction of a bitcoin I assume but that fraction changes everyday) and given that the other coins can't be used as currency (at this time anyway) what is backing their value besides BTC being the current viable and valued cryptocurrency?
Yeah it sounds difficult to analyze. Who knows what their planning with this? I imagine it's kind of like gold and silver. Not really official currency but still holds value. Don't know what these other coins are about or even what the future holds. It's a volatile market. I'm guessing that the people is what's backing their value.
