It’s a pipe dream but I’m on my knees praying for an Okada vs Danielson match at WK.

I don't think this is a pipe dream as much as we think. D Bry is a weirdo hippie im sure he has made more than enough money. I'm sure he sees guys like Okada, Omega, SANADA, Zack Sabre and sees a lot of dope shyt creatively him popping up in NJ wouldn't surprise me at all :manny:

Damn...... that Tanahashi vs Okada match was flames

So let me get this straight......

They are basically the Cena and Roman Reigns of NJPW?

Or are they the Steve Austin and Rock?

Trynna make sense of their feud and relation in regards to NJPW history

Martha

ive been following the past 6 years of NJPW thru what AXSTV feeds us, and I didn't go into NJPW's previous histoy yet, so I may be off.

from what I gather, if i had to make a comparison, i would say that theyre better versions of bret hart & shawn michaels.
better versions of those guys & they can actually draw.
ive heard them make the HBK/Tanahashi comparison numerous times on AXSTV.

as for a comparison to their feud, i'd go with kurt angle/aj styles.
sort of a torch-passing type of thing.(altho styles was the face of TNA initially, I know but im talking when he became the face of it again after it got bigger).

As a standalone Tanahashi would be like John Cena if the WWE was in 1995 level of trouble in 2004 and then got out of the hole once he got a full green light push to the top.

I don't get the john cena/roman reigns comparisons.

those dudes chased fans away.

while tanahashi is often credited for saving NJPW.

After watching Tanahashi vs Okada I feel like I should just give up and just go straight to the last third of any Okada match, the rest is just useless filler. He's late 2000's NOAH status.

I feel the same way about okada matches as well.

I want to say that hes overrated, but it comes off like he has the total package & IT factor for the japaneese crowd.

hes not a top 10 wrestler whose matches I check for in NJPW tho.

I'd fukk with Omega and Tanahashi as the main event. I don't think they can go back to Tanahashi/Okada, their match this weekend didn't draw well, it was not close to a sell out like the other two events were. They've run it back too many times now.
That's not really the case though. Since they started running these big triple shots to end the G1 the first show has always suffered. Can't use that as a barometer for how hot a match up is.

Okada is def in the top 10 of NJPW no question, but he's also definitely getting lower on my list of guys to get excited about, 100% because of how fond he is of completely dropping the story of a match to run into his finishing sequence, which is like a full 25% of any given match at this point. Doesn't matter if 40 minutes is dedicated to crippling him, he's going to pop up and hit a dropkick where he jumps over the guy's head, he's going to hit a tombstone, he's going to hit 3 rainmakers, he's going to have 15 counters in a row before hitting another rainmaker. I'm pretty over it most of the time. I don't feel like his matches ever really have those OH fukk moments when shyt gets real like you saw in the G1 with Ishii/Ibushi, Ibushi/Kenny, Kenny/Ishii, Ibushi/Tanahashi, or a lot of Nakamura matches (particularly the WK classic with Ibushi). There's an extra gear that he hasn't kicked it into in the past few years.

Wrong, last year the first of the triple headers (Naito vs Tanahashi) sold out Sumo Hall - with their small set up, so 7k aprox - and did basically the same number as the night 2 at Ryogoku (Omega vs Okada III).

This year it went back to struggling with Block A being so weak and Tana vs Okada being run to ground. Half empty building is strong enough of a sign. Let's not forget they also did poorly for their last Dome match too.

Only thing they have going for that feud is Dontaku 2018 that sold out and did a little better than last year, but they basically drew the same number as Budokan.

Reigns comparison makes no sense for anyone in New Japan, that I totally agree with.

But Cena and Tanahashi fits better than most other comps because they are both big stars that reignited their promotions when they were on the downswing. Granted, WWE was never even in the vicinity of the hole that New Japan was in in the mid 00's, but Cena's reign did draw a fukk ton of money for a long ass time, more than anyone not named Hogan, Austin and Rock. Tanahashi never was able to reach to heights of a Inoki, Choshu, Fujinami, Mutoh or Hashimoto but he was clearly above anyone else of his generation and the one that preceded him, just like Cena.

I think you are downplaying how much money Cena made and how big of a star he became. He got A LOT of hate online but the boos on TV and PPV did not translate in people going less to shows, on the contrary, he was the last person to make any difference in a company that did everything in their power to make all their wrestlers NOT make any difference. He didn't "save" WWE like Tana did NJPW, but he was their last big real star.

Off topic, but Chris Charlton might have had my favourite line of the tournament on commentary with "HIS ARMS WERE JUST LONG ENOUGH TO PUNCH GOD IN THE FACE! :damn:" when Ibushi lariated the shyt out of Tana :wow:

I lol'd on the final night when Kevin Kelly basically apologized for how lame A Block was, and then apologized for Naito's booking :mjlol:

"It's not like the guys in the A Block didn't try..." :mjlol:

"Don't worry, he'll get there. Eventually." :russ:

Did he explain the backstory with Kota calling Tana "God"? His whole thing for the final was being able to "surpass God", Ibushi is insane :pachaha: I'm glad Charlton got this gig, he knows his shyt.

Tanahashi is the biggest and greatest wrestler of all time to Ibushi, literally deifies him

Exactly, that why Charlton said that. I'm asking if he had time to explain that on commentary, I listen to the japanese feed.
