'Nina' Film Poster Released, Twitter Not Feeling Zoe Saldana as the High Priestess of Soul - Atlanta Black Star

The film will focus on the 15-time Grammy nominee and Grammy Hall of Fame Recipient and her culturally impactful songs and passionate politics. Simone will be portrayed by actress Zoe Saldana to the displeasure of many fans. There was fan outrage when The Guardians of the Galaxy actress was cast nearly two years ago. Saldana has been under extreme scrutiny because skin-tone politics came into play. Simone has a richer complexion and profound Black features that Saldana lacks. The actress had to be “darkened” to appear more like Simone.

Twitter users did not forget this controversy.

Many of the users are appalled that the filmmakers did not hire a dark-skinned woman to portray Simone. Viola Davis, Danai Gurira and other women could have been much better casting decisions, but Hollywood has a colorism problem when dealing with Blackness.

Nina will be released in theaters, VOD and Digital HD on April 22, 2016.

You know whats funny tho...Back in the day when Eddie Murphy was rumored to play Richard Pryor in his movie bio.....A few people said he'd be perfect, they'd just have to lighten his face. I'll never forget that. They said Eddie would be perfect because we all knew he could have possibly pulled it off properly. If u recall in the Jackson movie Terrence Howard played Jackie Jackson....it stood out at the time but in the end he pulled the role off. So when I see an uproar about Zoe taking this role I only see it as being petty.

You're very hung up on light skinned dark skinned. Move on.

Zoe is a b rate actress. If she pulls off Nina Simone then she'll surprise me.

Are there those who are criticizing skin tone as the issue for her playing Nina Simone, yeah, but that's also wrapped up in the fact that Nina Simone had to battle against the stereotyping and disdain of her dark skin and her features, shape of her nose, etc.

People should criticize that.

But not only that the fact that Zoe is a b rate acrtress.

Viola Davis would be a great choice, she was wonderful in the movie "Doubt". She's a strong actress.

The choice of Zoe Saldana makes one think they aren't taking the life of Nina Simone seriously.

Look, she could surprise me. People were in an uproar about Nicole Kidman potraying Virgina Woolf in "The Hours' but she got an Academy award for that role so who knows . . .

I agree that she shouldn't be playing Nina but Zoe isn't black now :dwillhuh:

so according to the coli the singer Seal and now Zoe Saldana aren't black :dwillhuh:

Haven't you heard? According to Coli militants you're not only not black if you're not African American, but you don't have the RIGHT to call yourself black if you're African, West Indian, or Afro-Latino. And all Africans and islanders hate being called black with a passion, and prefer being called "African" and "Caribbean" respectively, true story :troll:.

Not even trolling breh, a significant amount of Coli members think this, and will argue this

No need for the mental gymnastics. It's really not that much different.
Are the skin color and black features important to the storyline? That is a question casting directors ask. Obviously it was, but they chose to use black face instead of casting a dark skin actress. It would be like if they cast someone with straight hair to play Malcolm X making the conk storyline look stupid. When the conk storyline is an integral part of the plot.
