The fact remains that popular YouTubers make thousands a month in Patreon donations. There are many people willing to toss them a few dollars to do their thing but that's a different animal than paying a monthly fee for YouTube itself.

I've heard about this but I'm not completely sold on it. Adblock Plus doesn't feel like it uses all that many resources and I'm still not convinced ublock works as well as ABP

It's a rare exception. There's probably 2% of youtubers actually getting paid and their mostly managed by a company they're not independent as you'd think

even mid-lower tier YouTubers like Darksydephil pull in over a grand a month on Patreon which doesn't count his Machinima money. This is proof there is an audience that will toss these YouTubers a few dollars but paying for YouTube as a service is a joke. If YouTube Red takes off the bubble that is being a content creator on YouTube will burst because YouTube isn't gonna be able to compensate all these content creators with a $10 monthly fee and make it worthwhile for all parties involved.
