Jay Z was def poppin but that Vol. 3 shyt wasn’t barely even better than Nastradamus. Album was wack. Big Pimpin kept that shyt afloat. Even tho he had “Girls Best Friend” and “Anything”. But they was like bonus tracks or some shyt. “Girl’s Best Friend” was for the Blue Streak soundtrack. Mobb Deep’s sound was fazing out yet there was a bunch of different remixes to the Quiet Storm beat n shyt? RnB shyt like “You Will Never Find Another Lover” off the Funk Flex Vol 4 tape the next year over. My nikka I’m not even gonna hold u I’m glad u made this thread because this shyt is bringing back memories like a muthafukka. Lol. But yea. Mobb Deep was poppin fam. Why u think the next year over Prodigy dropped bangers like “Keep It Thoro” and “YBE” feat BG. How they sound get old when Quiet Storm ain’t sound like shyt else that was out at the time?

whatever you think of volume 3 is kinda pointless.
it dropped on December 28, 1999.
'99 jay-z was all about that volume 2 run.

quiet storm is one song and the original didn't do chit, despite it having the same beat.
those HNIC singles were not the mobb deep sound. anybody could've dropped a banger off that "keep it thoro" beat and most people know it from being on backstage, as opposed to HNIC.
YBE was a str8 sample from whodini, and prodigy's verse was ass. BG snatched that record.

NY all day..Da Stead & BK..
I think you made his argument much better in the Nas thread. You essentially argued that Mobb wasn’t a big deal to people your age. Freshman year to Sophomore year of high school. That they were Your big brothers group.

Let’s just assume that’s true. I can’t speak on what kids that age were into because I was in college. At the end of the day, that’s one demographic. For the big bros, Mobb was still a top tier group and they weren’t considered old school or to have fallen off. They picked up a lot of new fans that go round to because Hav updated the sound in a way that kept the core audience happy but appealed to more people.
Not true either. Cause like I said. I was a dj at the time. I KNOW the demo at the time. I KNOW the records I used to have to purchase.

Yes. YBE was One Love by Whodini. So fukkin what? If I Ruled The World was Friends by Whodini. Either way. shyt Quiet Storm was White Lines by Melle Mel. The track was dope. Prodigy did his thing. And nikka Alchemist did Keep It Thoro. Alchemist started that sound on Murda Musik nikka. And ur arguing with me about an album that u haven’t even revisited since 99. Who the fukk does that? nikka u don’t even remember what was on the album. nikkas is still using The Realest beat till this day.

I mean, im not saying that people my age weren't into mobb deep.

put it like this, mobb deep's name was more of a cafeteria topic when I was in middle school as opposed to high school.
but there were a lot of rappers at the time who were more popular with the kids, so there generally wasn't much loyalty for groups like say mobb deep, lost boyz, etc when they started falling off.
they were the chit when I was in middle school. but by the time I got to high school, they were just aiird and they didn't have the nostalgia factor to carry them with that age bracket like say a wutang. you'd see a lot more people coppin The W or some chit, even if they just let it collect dust and didn't really bump it(which was usually the case with The W).

but your big brother would have alot more loyalty to a group like mobb deep who dropped stuff like the infamous during some of the best years of their lives. their nostalgia for mobb deep is right up there with that of a wutang or bad boy.
spliz brought up HNIC. an album like HNIC, was more likely something that your homies pluck out of their big brother's collection while their brother is at work or in jail, and we check it out that way.

that's a better way to illustrate my point. and that's the epitome of semi-old school. when youre still on the radar of high school kids, but theyre not really checkin for you all like that.

and keep in mind, im not necessarily speaking for myself. im moreso speaking in general. im a rap fiend or rap nerd as you call it, so I was into all of this stuff just off GP. people like me don't really count.

and again, this is not an insult at all. its much better than being a group that simply came & went.:yeshrug:

yea, but havoc flipped that white lines track.
whodini chit was a str8 sample. it wasn't mobb deep's sound at all. THATS THE POINT.

I bought that murda muzik album after '99 actually.
fun fact: I got a good deal for it, and I thought that album cover was great. plus I felt like I owed them since I didn't support their previous projects. those are the reasons why I bought it. I had no expectations for that album.

yea, maybe in new York.

and I don't care about no e.money bags. LOL. that's some local new York chit.
you expected me to be impressed that you knew his cousin? LOL. youre lucky I even recognize his name.

the big bros weren't necessarily looking at them as a top-tier group anymore either.
they were just loyal to them, as long as they were at least still quality.
that's the main point.

the big bros were the ones that were really setting the standards, and the teenagers followed behind what was CURRENTLY hot with the big bros. not so much the favorites from the big bros past that they stayed loyal to.

that's how it used to be at least. nowadays dudes be like 38, still jocking their favorite rappers from high school and chit, in denial that theyre still poppin. and they wonder why the younger cats don't care what they like. its too much of a gap now.

And u REFUSE to hear it. One is from LA. I don’t know where the other is from. And I’m from NYC and was a god damn DJ who’s job was to play what was hot. We ALL telling u the same shyt fam. I just showed somebody ur post and they lookin at ya shyt like u smoke crack bro. U trippin right now. Lol

alot of nobodies ring bells behind the curtain.

of course I know e.money bags. im a rap nerd.
but most people never heard of dude.

you were out THERE in new York. your job was running around NY.
once you get past the big dogs, alot of this stuff that yall be hyping up on here, didn't make a splash past north jersey.
and mobb deep weren't big dogs like that at this point outside of a cut here-n-there. do the math. subtract divide.

nikka New York is where shyt HAPPENED. It’s where the labels n everything was at. Most of the time if it was poppin here. It was poppin everywhere. Especially a fukkin platinum album. U was on the East Coast too. U should know better. And by the way. My mentor was doing gigs across the world. Even in Africa. I wasn’t runnin wit no local nikkas.

my circle was rap junkies. we knew all this chit. we really dont count.

im speaking in general.

@mobbinfms is from LA, but hes an east coast poster at heart. we been traded for him. I guess you aint know.

you aint DJ chit out here. if anybody needs to speak for themselves, its you.

and you already waved the white flag. you tried to say that mob deep was top tier in '99, then turned around and admitted that they weren't even a top-tier act in their prime. youre all over the place.

this line of thinking is one of the reasons why a couple of half-naked female rappers are the only new stars to come out of NY in well over a decade.

LOL. 2019 and new york dudes still think theyre the be all/end all, even after YEARS of being humbled.

at some point, common sense kicks in and you gotta realize that everybody has their own local scenes and theres only but so much time in a day. I will agree that the biggest stuff coming out of NY at the time was the biggest stuff over here too. but after you get pass the powerhouses, its cut the deck and hit-or-miss.

okay buddy.

stick to missy & timbaland.

What does Missy and Timbaland have to do with this discussion? Poke fun all you want, but if you want to throw them out there like that, Timbaland is a huge part of the reason The Lox was "poppin" in late 1999 going into 2000.
