Your modern Marvel fan, maybe they don't even remember some of the X-Men characters,
The seeming exclusion of the X-Men from upcoming FGC centerpiece Marvel vs Capcom Infinite obviously did not go without comment. Though earlier rumors suggested their involvement plus that of the Fantastic Four, E3 2017 came and went without so much as a snikt-bub to please the fans. And now it seems as if Capcom's trying to do their damnest to downplay that gaping hole in the Marvel side of the roster.

Said Capcom Director of Production Michael Evans to Gamespot recently:
Your modern Marvel fan, maybe they don't even remember some of the X-Men characters, but they know some of the Guardians characters or Black Panther. You know what I mean? Captain Marvel may seem like a strange pick, but she's fantastic. She fits the gameplay. She fits the story, and they're gonna be really pushing her as a strong female lead all the way up into the movie.
If his statement comes off a little incredulous, that's at least partially because Logan was released just a few months ago, on March 3rd, to general and critical acclaim. Similarly, though less well received, X-Men Apocalypse and X-Men: Days of Future Past were all released within the last five years -- more recently than Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3, in fact.
