In college I took a sociology course about the origins of black religions. Mind you my professor was Muslim. Obeah, Voodo, Santeria etc were all practiced by our ancestors and stigmatized as "black, evil magic" during slavery and colonization.
Me personally, I am Agnostic but having grown up as a descendent of a Grenadian and St.Lucian in a mixed community culture, in the 90's Haitians were always made fun of and looked at negatively from the majority of the other West Indians. I think part of it was the French colonial difference versus the majority British rule, combined with the Voodoo aspect.
I'm on the fence, in every black neighborhood I've been too, the common denominator are various Churches and Liquor Stores. As people mentioned before, why hasn't any religion or spiritual being helped us in a large way. From Voodo, to Christianity, once black people embrace a religion, we seem to go all out. This is evident by Jamaica having the most Churches on Earth per Square Mile and there being a church every other block in Harlem and Bed Stuy, but where is the return on all of this investment.
