I don't actually want him handling the cases - he doesn't seem to be particularly good at writing - but he needs to see first-hand just how close the system is at all times.Why would he do that?

That, I'm not really sure. Criminal Law and Criminal Procedure should have done a pretty good job of explaining how backwards and predatory the mass-incarceration system is.
