I still don’t see how the math works out...how do you give away AAA games that cost around 100 million dollars to make (not counting marketing cost) on top of a 7.4billion dollar acquisition and still profit.

A 15 dollar subscription isn’t going to do it as we see with Netflix (which is now 18 dollars), and they are trying to cut off people sharing accounts. Sure, Microsoft has the money to BLOW now in terms of this service being a loss leader but the only way they make even on it is if they essentially get the entire PlayStation and Nintendo fan base into the eco-system which is still highly unlikely.

They are counting on this acquisition tripling gamepass subscribers

I look at it like this.

Microsoft would PREFER that you sign up for Office365. You get all the Office applications updated incrementally instead of once every few years, and functionality nos at its best.

However, they'll still happily sell you Office 2019 right now as a standalone product, because they know not everyone wants to buy completely into their ecosystem, and because they'd really like your money.

Ultimately, there's nothing proving that the XBox division is somehow exempt from the same business practices. One way or another, they want your money. If it makes the most sense financially to have some games be available in more places than just Gamepass, they're going to do it. They're just not at any obligation to divulge that information in full at this time, regardless of how anyone feels about it.

I mean, Microsoft needed this acquisition to be competitive. They really had nothing to sell the system before this merger aside from the same old gears, forza, halo...and gamepass.

If this lights a fire under Sony’s ass to expand their studios or build more all the better. I always said Microsoft is needed in the home console market for competition, even gamepass is good. Sony would probably be charging 90 dollars for games right now if they were the only console on the market.

Who knows what bullshyt nintendo would be on...I say it’s all good and this will actually be an interesting console generation this time around
This.

Gears and Halo are dope franchises but we just witnessed last that ultimately the people bought into PlayStation. I agree with the Bethesda deal that made Xbox a must cop for a lot people who like that library of games Bethesda has. Even the existing lineup Xbox had before the deal looked really good

Eh...this is kind of where i stand also. I don’t really feel like going back and forth with people enjoying the victory parade because none of us know shyt people are just grasping as straws right now based on vague double speak.

This is similar to when they told us Ori and The will of the wisp wouldn’t be coming to switch

In regards to Ori, Aaron Greenberg himself said:

exclusively on Xbox One and on the PC.” Since Microsoft “will be focused on making games for our platforms, and we have no plans to expand our exclusive first-party games to any other consoles.

This was in September 2019. Ori and The Will of The Wisps released in March 2020 on the Switch

Subs have always been more profitable and or valuable than out right purchases.

Doesn't matter what you apply it too...

Layaway...

People have to come into the store to pay on it

Credit cards...
Interest rates

Applications
Pay 200 bucks for adobe and use it for 7 years or pay 15 a month for forever?

Youtube, twitch, facebook gaming...
It's all about subbing and following

There aren't many if any situations were out right buying something is better for the seller over the person continually paying and or being a consumer.

This is also good for most consumers because they don't have to drop lump sums up front. The only area this becomes anti consumer is with interest rates and ownership.

Ok, so why does Disney refuse to release it’s movies on streaming for a flat rate? Why is it that they refuse to release their blockbusters like black widow if they could make up for it with subscriptions? Why are they charging an increased price to watch movies the day of release, like Raya and The Last Dragon and Mulan if subs were enough?

Well they don't need to, disney plus is a money tree for them more so than they even realize

Disney Plus hits 94.9 million subscribers, beating its four-year goal in 14 months

You can bet they are going to make sure to keep fresh content on there now though.

And even with all those subscribers they don’t feel confident putting out a major marvel movie on it.

They know the increase of subscriptions and even the increased rental sales won’t amount to the potential billion in ticket sales they would make if they released it in theaters post-pandemic.

Why would they when the are going to get just as many eyes for there spin off shows?

They aren't even put out multiple marvel shows at the sametime because they know it would be pointless.

They are going to take advantage of both medium's

When they sell you a $70 game in a store the platform holder doesn't get anywhere near $70.

When you sub to Game Pass all that goes directly to the company.

Disney gets much of ticket sales. That's why theaters rape people on concessions. Disney will get dragged kicking and screaming to go all in on streaming though. They'll just tack of fees to hit movies on Disney+.

Nah, the reason they're doing that is to keep subbers subbed longer. If they put all their marvel stuff all at once, they run the risk of having accounts cancelled quickly. It's also why they've gone the weekly slow drip release for their original shows.

Attach rate is around 10 games per console. At full price that’s $700 in software you will buy. Also keep in mind that money gets split up the platform holder only gets a portion of that money.

You hold Gamepass for ~7 years Microsoft has made more money off you than they could trying to sell individual games. Also they keep all that money cause it’s going straight through their store.

On top of the fact that Gamepass games still sell very well, and sometimes getting on Gamepass has increased a games sales and dlc purchases.

The economics for Gamepass work just fine. It’s the old buy $60-$70 game then trade it in at GameStop that has the iffy economics right now.
