This why George Lucas was smart for enforcing certain rules with the Star Wars EU:
1. Writers were not allowed to kill off Luke, Han, or Leia under any circumstances. (That would have killed their draw.)
2. Writers were not allowed to touch anything involving the Clone Wars, or Anakin’s fall to the dark side. (George Lucas was saving that story for the prequels.)
3. Writers were not allowed to reveal Yoda’s home planet or the name of his species. (That would have demystified Yoda.)
I’m pretty sure there were other rules Lucas had in place.

Off top: Anakin solo wasn't allowed to turn to the darkside, so they had to flip it to Jacen instead.
Not just the Clone Wars, they weren't allowed to touch anything a 1000 years before ANH, which is why all the EU games and comics etc always cut off at that point. (And lo and behold, EPISODE I references "the Sith have been extinct for a millennia", showing George's foresight in not letting anyone fukk with the scope of the saga).
