It would be different if Fields was like a 10 year veteran. Heā€™s only two years older than Williams. He wants to be great himself and have a future in the league. Why would he want to be in a situation where no matter how well he plays, heā€™s gonna get traded and groom his replacement? On Williams side, if heā€™s the #1 pick, why would he want to go to a situation where heā€™s not starting on day one, especially when heā€™s the ā€œbest prospect since ever?ā€ Michael Vick was the last QB who sat for a year. If you get drafted number one at QB, youā€˜re expected to play right away. If heā€™s not ready, why do you even draft a QB when youā€™re basically on the cusp of being a playoff team? Heā€™s supposed to be better than Fields on day one, so if you draft him and trade Fields, they need to make the playoffs, or at LEAST be above .500.
He's better than Fields but I'm looking at the Bears as a special case given our history. I want Fields traded for picks but if he isn't, draft and sit Caleb until we can get Fields trade value up.
P.s. I don't view this Bears squad as a team ready to make a playoff run just yet. This is not a good squad.

They were literally 3 bad coaching decisions away from being 10-7. Had they beaten GB, they wouldā€™ve finished with the same 8-9 record. GB made it in with a 9-8 record, so thereā€™s no reason to think the Bears are SO far away. If they finished 7-10 this year and SHOULD only get better by adding the right pieces, so why canā€™t they be a 9-8 or 10-7 team next season?

If the Bears draft Caleb, and you say heā€™s better than Fields, plus heā€™ll have an additional first round help, Iā€™m expecting playoffs next season :yeshrug:

Truth is if you've got no takers on Fields it might be best to keep him.

Cause if Eberflus is truly a lame duck coach then let Fields take the lumps so Caleb doesnt develop any bad habits that the next coach has to fix.

they arent, I look at it as a foregone conclusion - we all like Justin, but this is the opportunity and the quality of QB we have been waiting for for generations now as Bears fans

Im very curious the options that will be available at #9
Odunze/bowers has to be the choice. Unless they grab Aiyuk in the offseason. If so, draft best OL available

Facts and I believe Eberflus is a lame duck

A lot can change in the off season but right now I don't like our trench play on either side of the ball at all right now

The way I see it, if you're upgrading at QB, the team shouldn't get worse (barring major injuries), and they were 7-10 last season.

Trade value, brehā€¦

Sorry but that makes no sense. The Bears wouldn't be trading him to an offensive coordinator. They would be trading him to a different team and those teams would have already scouted Fields and understood what he could and could not not do.

A coach that is coming back next year would defend Fields to offensive coordinator candidates when that coach knows that barring something unforeseen Fields would be returning too and working with one of the candidates for that offensive coordinator position.

Just looking at who was hired you can tell that they are looking towards bringing Fields back, because that same offensive coordinator fixed Geno Smith. Fields for good or bad is a known commodity that a new offensive coordinator might be able to fix. Drafting Caleb Williams is a complete crapshoot and he could be the next CJ Stroud or Bryce Young, but more likely it would be something in between.

the same person who reported that also said he expects the Bears to draft Caleb and that they were using the chance to coach/develop Caleb as a selling point to potential OCs

Of course, the chance, potentially, to coach USCā€™s Caleb Williams was something mentioned to me as a drawing card by candidates for the job (though Eberflus did defend Justin Fields in the interviews, as I understand it).
