I think a bunch of you are missing my point. The TIME cover story has nothing to do with domestic violence. The domestic abuse and child abuse publicity certainly doesn't help though. Overall, the point is that several aspects of the NFL - all of which are interconnected - are under very public scrutiny and attack. The prudent move is to rebrand, which typically appeases an angry public. Which is why I'm baffled the owners haven't done some backroom-dealing to move Goodell into a cush, behind the scenes role so he publicly resigns. The arrogance - of the NFL and Goodell - is exactly the sort of thing that sinks ventures that seem - as does the NFL - unsinkable. It's as if they've become so drunk off their absurd influence (controlling how media reports on them, even when it comes to criminal activity on behalf of players and owners alike, labeling themselves a non-profit, fleecing the public through breast cancer awareness schemes with minimal blowback, etc) they completely abandoned the notion of practical wisdom, which would allow for short term setbacks and concessions in order to ensure the long term con goes as planned. They're doing the opposite. And no, football ain't gonna disappear this season, nor next, nor 5 years from now. But the momentum is building, and without addressing that momentum keenly there will be significant repercussions sooner than a lot of you think.

Outside of guys like Keith Olberman nobody in the mainstream media is really going in that hard.. Most of the harshest critique is coming from indy "new" media sources like TMZ , Salon and Huffpo...Most of the big wigs are still carrying water for the league..

All this outrage is mostly by people who don't give a fukk about this sport. These fakkits wouldn't be watching on Sunday anyways. Soon enough these whiny liberals and queers will find some other bullshyt to cry over. Probably about a third of the way through the season. A crisis point? LMAO stop Walt.

I think that is what is getting lost in this....that the people complaining and driving the story...don't watch football...are not consumers of the sports...the nfl makes no money from them and thus does not care about them...

People act like for all the Ray Rice stuff...you can catch interviews of women at a ravens game with ray rice jerseys on saying "i am still going to support ray and support the ravens because i like the team and football...yeah i saw the tape so what"

People act like there were not a ton of folks at the Vikings game last week with Adrian Peterson jerseys on.

People act like the NFL hasn't turned Thursday into Monday night football...

I see Anheuser Busch didn't pull any advertising...because they know the second that they do every beer company in the world will be lined up to throw 100 of millions of dollars at the NFL's feet.

Even more importantly...Obama is right on the verge of getting George Bushed into a war with ISIL/ISIS and so when that happens the national media...the CNN's of the world, Fox News of the world...will pretty much overnight stop talking about what is going on in the NFL...and so the only people left to consume these NFL abuse stories will be people who watch the NFL...and they will not stop watching because of that.

I'm a woman and I'm an unapologetic football fan, both of the NFL and college football. While I am not condoning the domestic violence incidents that have occurred recently (especially since I have been a victim of domestic violence), the piling on is getting out of hand. What's stunning to me is that most of the piling on is being done by those who don't watch football in the first place!!

What have they been saying that could tear down the NFL? I haven't really been paying too much attention to them..

Shefter REALLY went in on the league when Ray Rice only got 2 games. He went on a 2 day diatrod on the lack of leadership and responsibility of Goodell and blah blah. Hanna Storm had an editorial segment of sports center the other day and said that she had to explain what ray rice did and all this other bullshyt.

shyt has gotten way out of control

It can be argued that the NFL at this point is bigger than any of the companies that it uses as an ad revenue source..

So if Budweiser says goodbye, the league makes a deal with Miller

If McDonalds taps out the league can run to Burger King

If Coke leaves they can be replaced with Pepsi..

I honestly think the NFL could open their own fast food chains at this point and compete with some of their sponsors. Just name each burger joint after each team in their states and serve the same cheap processed food that all these major corps do..

Packers Chicken all throughout Wis...

Bengals Burgers in Ohio

Bronco Brewery. Get your Broncos Beer!!!

etc..etc...

This thing is bigger than Nino Brown

Football is not going anywhere. I don't think some of you realized how deeply football is woven into the fabric of America. Yes, there will be tragedies like that young boy who died on the field, but please understand that this happens in all major sports:

Football is a way of life in many communities. I mean it is so fukkin serious. And at the end of the day we all realize its a dangerous sport. But the sport itself will only become more and more popular. The attention it has gotten lately due to domestic/child abuse will fade away, especially when we educate ourselves about these crimes and understand that, based on percentages, there are going to be NFL players who commit these crimes. What are there like 1500 or more players? All men? Yeah, there are even more abusers in the league, believe that. And in all other occupations and industries too.

There will be bumps along the road, like with anything. But...Football. A'int. Goin. Anywhere.

I'm a woman and consider myself a feminist. I don't plan to stop watching the NFL and have not sold or given away my Texan tickets. None of my other female NFL friends have entertained that either. I didn't stop watching the NBA after Jason Kidd or Penny Hardaway and other favored players beat women, but I did stop being a fan of those individuals. I recognize that a few players have been exposed for their violent behaviors in the NFL recently, but if women were to boycott every organization that had men on deck that abused women, I wouldn't be able to buy groceries, watch ANY sporting event, movie, tv show, or support civil rights leaders.

Domestic violence permeates in all arenas, race, class and countries. Boycotting the NFL won't stop it, and the beer companies are not going to drop any major league anytime soon. And since I'm in Texas and my dude's family all played college football, I don't doubt that any future son of mine would also be attracted to playing football.

the internet
this is a battle between people under educated/lower on the socioeconomic ladder & people that tend to have more money/education.
It doesnt take a rocket scientist to figure out whose going to win this war.

Lets be honest here...football players and the system have had free reign for a long time. They've been able to do what they want for the longest, w/o any consequences.
The concussions and Penn State issues were the tip of the iceberg.

Have any of you been around college players? A lot of them are straight up evil...and get away w/ things none of us could ever dream of. Same w/ the pros.
The culture is going to have to change if this sport is going to grow. You cant expect society to change, and football to stay the same.

Whats going to happen is football is going to be a sport for southerner poor people. There are going to be less and less kids coming up playing high school ball.

Honestly...would you want your kids to play football?
Why risk all those injuries when there are a ton of other options.

Y'all really think it's all good just because the ratings are okay NOW? Shortsightedness has been the demise of MANY a business.. the NFL is not exempt. Think beyond today. Think about how much the media has shifted from reporting news to being the judge, jury, and executioners. They can bring down anyone. They brought down Joe fukking Paterno. If you think the NFL can't be brought down, you're nuts. The liberal/women/gay/etc. mob wields true power.

Also, y'all really think the product on the field hasn't changed? I've heard PLENTY of diehard fans say in the past couple years they barely even care about outcomes of games anymore, only watch their own teams (if they have nothing better to do with their families/wives/etc), feel no emotional investment in the game anymore, etc. due to how much the game has changed. The rule changes all benefiting the passing game, pandering to casual fans, high scoring, fantasy football, etc. is killing the game for the diehards. Of course the product on the field has changed. As a former addict of NFL football who would watch from the opening kick of the early games to 0:00 of SNF, I can't even be bothered unless I am doing nothing else or the Steelers are on.

Everything feels different now, and it's not just the violence or the game changing either. All the political/social issues being injected into the game, the saturation, the game feeling more about the show than the football. It's just hard to see it the same.

Football is definitely heading for a crisis, I agree 100% with Walt. It can only be saved with a new commissioner, A LOT less arrogance, distancing itself from the current off-the-field violence plaguing it, and distancing itself from the social/political issues and putting the focus back on the GAME.

Football is not going anywhere. I don't think some of you realized how deeply football is woven into the fabric of America.

But...Football. A'int. Goin. Anywhere.

I just dont understand why people keep saying this. Everything loses popularity, everything goes numb at some point. EVERYTHING. I mean cmon man.

Everything dies. Hence the reason we dont have freaking gladiators anymore lol. Hence the reason that outside of Money Mayweather, most people dont give a shyt about boxing. Hence the reason that Baseball was NFL, and College FB was 1,000x more popular than pro football, but guess what? Time change.

I just dont think you are grasping "not as popular" vs "total implosion". No one is saying that there wont be an NFL. Hell, there will be a NFL for as long as I am alive. But that sh*t can easily be what boxing is today. People go watch but its totally dominated by the major sports.

Its ALWAYS, ALWAYS going to be something 100% inforeseen and unplanned for. Who on earth ever couldve predicted that Blockbuster video would go under?? I mean they could adapt to anything - except for some new system that was created where people could watch movies over some space technology called the internet lol.

Could you have predicted that the music industry would have gone under because some 17 year old kid created an MP3 sharing service?

Could you have predicted that The Washington Post and other newspapers are now going obselete because people get info in thier hands via twitter and FB?

These little things you are ignoring are tearing the NFL down. When have you EVER seen so many players come out and say that they wont let thier kids play, or they dont want them to?

I am a fb fanatic, raised around the sport, played a very high level, and still involved in PROs and CFB more than I am willing to share here. There is a 100% shift in a lot of things you are ignoring, INCLUDING the talent.
