As someone who worked at the NBA a few years ago in a position dealing with live game stats. Those LeBron assists he cited are 100% assists based what I was told what are qualified as an assist. So already that video credibility is shot imo.

ASSIST IS LOOSELY DEFINED AND A LOT IS LEFT TO THE JUDGEMENT OF THE SCOREKEEPER
FOR INSTANCE, A PUMP FAKE TO CREATE YOUR OWN SHOT AFTER BEING PASSED THE BALL DOES NOT ALWAYS GET COUNTED AS AN ASSIST
IT DEPENDS ON HOW THE SCOREKEEPER WANTS TO MARK IT DOWN WHICH IS WHY HOME STATS ARE USUALLY MORE LENIENT
I’m aware, that’s what my point was based on what NBA considers an assist is. It’s two or three steps during a dribble then a gather step. Pump fakes are based on if it’s a quick one then a couple dribbles before the gather. If it’s a pump fake, stop, then dribble, then usually no assists. But as you said up to scorekeeper and some that I dealt with were adamant on it when I and my supervisors disagreed.

So an assist can be more subjective from person to person. As opposed to a player dribblng the ball off his foot and out of bounds or a 24 second violation being given to mj as a steal is outright cheating?
Well maybe your inside knowledge can explain that very first LeBron assist he shows: I count two dribbles and about 11-12 steps after LeBron passes it to him. You're saying that wasn't a mistake and should really be an assist and not a travel?

At my position I had there at the time there are like 5-6 different camera angles to look at if we thought an assist was iffy. But from what I saw Hill took two steps after the initial dribble then gathered the ball for a layup. Based on that, it’s an assist. Usually three steps after a dribble was
, but that’s based on the scorekeeping staff in the house most times.
Well there isn’t the tech and advanced standard of play-by-play stats of each possession like there is today. Today, that would 1000% not happened, but back in the 80s it was Wild Wild West lol.
