I never had an issue with comment sections. 1) you know what to expect 2) it’s always good to have a reality check and know what opposing views think...too many people want to be insulated in echochambers and people who only think like them 3) they were easy to avoid

:yeshrug:

The issue is that its the absolute worst people in society who have the most energy and time to participate in that. While anyone with a soul gets driven out or just tired. So the longer it exists, the more it promotes the most hateful, ignorant viewpoints. Why do we need outlets that treat hateful, ignorant viewpoints as more worthy of promotion than loving, rational, or reasoned ones?

The unfiltered internet means accepting some "trolls".

Edit: It's you, and people who think like you who don't want an unfiltered internet. I don't know how you got this so twisted.

Imagine if your childhood classes had worked that way. Imagine if classroom discussion was simply, "unfiltered", not only with no rules or moderation but no adult figures even helping people understand how to interact with each other.

In the end, the ONLY viewpoints that would stand out were the people who didn't mind shouting over everyone else and who refused to shut up no matter what happened. People with nuanced points would be drowned out. People with extensive points would be buried. Soft-spoken or caring voices wouldn't stand a chance. The only voices who would get attention would be basically the worst people in the room, the ones who didn't care about anyone else, the ones who were louder and more persistent than anyone else.

And that's what you get in places like the Yahoo comments section.

My point still stands that he's in favor of aore restricted internet.

And I'm not convinced that loud "trolls" in the comment section is worse than no comment section.

When I travel to India, if I log into a website and don't change my settings I automatically get the Indian version of the website. And since I use a different person's Yahoo account as my throwaway account for web signups, I end up logging onto Yahoo on occasion and seeing the Yahoo news on the front page.

You go to any Yahoo India news story that involves any Muslim in any capacity - it doesn't matter if they're a singer, actor, politician, crime victim, university professor, etc. - and the DOMINANT comments are the most racist, vile shyt you can ever imagine. Like, "You are all terrorists, you are all the scum of the Earth, you are evil demon children, you are all the child molesters and rapists, we are going to kill you and take your women", except usually even fouler and with more name-calling and mispellings.

That's not 1 in 10 comments. That's 5 in 10 comments. REGARDLESS of what the topic was about. Can you imagine who would even engage when that was all they saw there, every time. Forget about people like yourself, who I'm sure are quite hardened. How does the average young Muslim girl feel when she sees that? How much more likely is the average young Indian, Muslim or not, to be radicalized if that's all he sees on EVERY article?

And the Indian Yahoo is worse than the USA Yahoo, but there is anti-Black shyt on a lot of the articles that wasn't much better. And even if the straight racists didn't have a majority, the idiots and trolls often did because no one who wasn't an idiot or a troll had the energy for it anymore.

Yahoo just needs to be gutted entirely for both reasons of racism/discrimination, and the fact it's a failure on every level.

This is true.

I still go there because I've signed up to too many websites with that account....but there is literally nothing they do well. Not one thing.

you're not spraying nothing on it. Yahoo threw the garbage and the garbage can out.

it's not just the racism, its the misinformation that's being spread.

the age of the internet, has distorted and spread so much bullshyt that people are dumb smart now. Intelligently ignorant.
A web site cannot throw the garbage away
If you put perfume on garbage you won't smell the foul scent
If you get rid of the comment section you just won't see or read the hate.
They didn't throw nothing out, they did not eliminate hatred or anything like that.

And as far as miinformation the left needs to understand they can't control speech and they shouldn't attempt to even if they could.
from closing yahoo comments to getting mad at joe rogan for giving people the left dislikes a "platform" to Elon Musk working with Trump, it's all nonsense.
It's as stupid as cancel culture

If there is stupidity I say expose it!!!
if there is hatred, I say expose it!!
If there is misinformation, I say expose it!!

Otherwise you are just hiding it
Society can hide all the symptoms it wants but that only means the doctor won't see them.

And FYI, it is because of comments that this was found and the internet focused on it.

There's really no point monetary wise to having a mostly anonymous comment section for articles where they say mostly racist/homophobic/sexist comments. Yahoo doesn't gain at all. There is no point.

Have you ever been in sales or marketing?

You are basically saying keeping people engaged means nothing for a product/service

What about PR? Having a bunch of racist/sexist/homophobic comments after every article doesn't help your company's reputation.
I don't think you can fault yahoo news for other people's silly comments, it's a user generated forum.

People need to know where we are as a society, where we as a people stand, closing down these things does not help that.
