I don't have any kids and don't want any. But if something happens and I have a child, I will change my name.

If you've noticed, cultural dispossession has similar affects upon people who already suffer from material dispossession. Look at colonized people around the world. Maoris. Indigenous Australians. Khoi San.Their lack of morale is rooted in their widespread destruction in their self-esteem. A name is much more than a name. It is a history. It is a past which has been robbed from black people in America. Part of a process of regaining dignity requires black people to feel proud of their roots. The fact that people in this thread feel alienation towards their family names is evidence enough of that.

That's cute. Another way to look at it would be that a grown man knows right from wrong and when you choose to do wrong, regardless of circumstance, you made a choice. If blaming it on someone or something else helps you sleep at night then go right ahead. Just take into consideration that African Americans aren't the only ethnic group to face discrimination OR institutional racism when arriving in this country as immigrants.

Outside of legal stuff I haven't used my government name in a loooong time I have a couple african names I go by. First names like Kofi, Nubia, Imani, Nia and Kwasi seem to be popular with us already. As for last names I suspect most people if they're going to change them would get a dna test done to narrow things down, even then if a certain name speaks out to you adopt that one, whatever you might choose is better than an old slave label.

That's silly breh. Africans are the oldest race of people on the planet and our history is way more than just slavery. Before you were forced to have a European name, you had a traditional African name, traditional African language, and traditional African religion.
