Those looking to shut the door on the X-Men film series after Dark Phoenix may need to take a step back.

According to director Simon Kinberg, Dark Phoenix is just the beginning of a new era for the series.

“I see it as a new chapter,” Kinberg says. “I see it as taking the franchise in a different direction tonally. And that doesn’t mean that the next one will have the same tone, it just means that the next one can have a different tone. I think for many years, the X-Men, Bryan [Singer] really transformed the superhero genre in 2000 or 2001 when the first one came out. That’s almost 20 years ago. It is a long time ago. And at that time, superhero movies were not wildly popular, actually. There had been a few failures in the mid-90s, and there hadn’t been a lot of superhero movies, if any, around that time and X-Men sort of was revolutionary in its moment.

"But that was 20 years ago and I think, I really felt like it time to really change the look, the feel, the tone, the vibe of these movies. And that doesn’t mean this is the one going forward, it just means that if it's me or whoever directs the next one, you can make it different, and you have to make it different.”

Kinberg seems to feel like he’s set up a very interesting new era for the X-Men film franchise where each film can have a more distinct flavor to it, similar how Logan and Deadpool were made. How the looming Fox-Disney deal and the X-Men’s presumed introduction into the Marvel Cinematic Universe affects that future remains to be seen.

Kinberg has spoken previously about the influence Logan had on his approach to Dark Phoenix.

“The way I wanted to make the movie was very different than the aesthetic of previous X-Men movies, which I’ve been very involved in and proud of,” Kinberg told Empire. “But I wanted it to feel more naturalistic, I wanted it to feel edgier, more handmade, more real. I was very inspired by what James Mangold did with Logan, and I felt like if I could bring a measure of that aesthetic in the film that all of the intergalactic and larger-scale things that happen in the movie would feel more shocking, more realistic, more emotional. They’d be grounded in some reality.

"And so, all of the movie – from the costumes, to the title card, to the set design, to the way the X-jet looks – all of that stuff is just more analogue in a way," Kinberg said. "More like, let’s say, the original Star Wars movies. Not that analogue, but the movies I grew up loving had this very gritty, edgy, cool, human feeling to them."

Not saying it can't or won't be done well, but Fox's approach to this movie based off what I saw in the trailer is gonna suck. There's still a discernible agenda to fit in comic book elements they think will sell the movie at the compromise of patient and thorough storytelling. There's no reason for anyone to care about this incarnation of Jean Grey yet where a Dark Phoenix movie makes sense, at all.

Facts. DP Saga is something that should've been built up to. Not rushed into after JUST recasting Jean a movie prior.

TYRONE GA!
Man what a fukking let down Apocalypse was...literally, the only villain bigger than Thanos, and they fukk it up on every level possible. From the actor to the story, to the fukking powers. I already wasn't going to watch it in the theaters due to the cast (Olivia Munn as Psylocke :mjlol:) but when I finally caught online...I probably facepalmed about 20 times.

I thought Olivia was fine as Psylocke

But Poc...... :mjcry:

Have you seen the cartoon or read the comics?

Not dissing you but trying to see if you have a valid comparison on what the character is supposed to be.

I LIVE IN A CARDBOARD BOX!
A lot of Marvel purists would have you believe that all of the X-Men films are shyt even though 8 out of 11 range from fun movies to one of the greatest comic book films of all time. And to be perfectly honest, I didn't hate X3 or Apocalypse as much as everyone else but I realize that I'm in the minority on that opinion so :manny:

A lot of Marvel purist?

That’s not true.

I’m sorry, I can’t let you come in here and do this. That’s not true at all

Maybe some had said it not saying it’s flawless but not “a lot aka the majority.”

A lot of casuals said they didn’t like those movies as much. And we have to stop the Marvel fans hate everything NOT Marvel shyt.

If it’s a good movie, props are given. If it’s bad, it’s called out. If it’s just ok, it’s just ok and there is nothing wrong with that and shouldn’t be taken as a diss

Also...... if we keeping it Buck!

Many DC purist overpraise some of these movie to spite the Marvel fans

Like we’ve had cats come in here and say Apocalypse was better than Cap 2/3 or Black Panther.

take Professor X, Magneto and Wolverine out* and name me a single character from the entire XMen movie franchise you'd go to bat for. The only ones I'd even entertain are Nightcrawler (for 1 action sequence in overrated ass X2), Deadpool (who shouldn't even count in this argument), and Quiksilver, who is one of the only "funny" characters in the entire run, and basically just has the 2 standout action sequences. He's the better Nightcrawler. Every single other character in this entire series has been a dud. Every single one.

these movies have always been meh, it's not revisionist history. If Fox was still a thing, I'd look forward to literally every other superhero universe over XMen. I'd be more pumped for Harley Quinn than the next X movie. I don't even know what Valient is, and I'd be more pumped for those. I think the only XMen movies I walked out of hyped was First Class, b.c it was fresh and Vaughn > Singer, and DoFP which was a half good movie.

*these 3 and all actors involved are plenty fukkin boring too. Jackman's Wolverine has earned the praise though so i won't knock the character... even though I'll look back on him and just think about Logan and nothing else. The other 2 are just old man playing point/counterpoint and then you get the occasional awesome Magneto breakdown. The younger versions are better, but still have a bunch of homotional snoozey scenes.
