I haven't played 2k19
But I can tell your with certainty, HCTP absolutely holds up and is not nostalgia. It's an excellent blend of arcade and simulation. Wrestlers actually behave like themselves(Jericho's mouth moves for an entire match cuz he's constantly talking shyt). It has an amazing roster.

Are you sure about that? Because that engine was getting praised to high heaven during that time period all the way back to the WCW games. I mean No Mercy had it's technical shortcomings for sure, and I felt they could have moved past the blocky graphics by that point. But the games with that engine won fighting game of the year awards. So I can see why people look back fondly.

Have you tried playing it now? I always tell people who praise No Mercy to do the three match challenge, the challenge is being able to play three matches with it slow paced engine. It was great at the time, but No Mercy doesn't hold up at all anymore. HCTP however will still suck you into a marathon from time to time.

The rosters were fukking awful back in the early days. shyt, I remember those awful WCW/nWo games. The early SD/SvR games the gameplay was ok, not great but ok. I remember wanting sim shyt back then (like small guys not picking up big dudes and anything to beat those running spam shyt even back then). I remember people clamoring for legends back then when they hated the roster at the time.

DOR 2 was far superior but I did like it, the truth is Gamecube is the only system to do HIAC correctly. Those HIAC tag matches were some of the most wildest matches i've ever had for any game.

HCTP and SYM are 2 underrated GOATs of the wrestling game. No one talks about them in the same light as No Mercy but they are night and day better than other wrestling games new and old

HCTP & 2k19 are the same in that they both righted the wrongs of the previous title, SYM was very good but you could tell that it needed to be polished. I get instant nostalgia when I hear this theme
