Guys, we gotta think about this shyt logically.

Here's the truth, we need to decide if we're aiming for win now or focusing on development because we don't have the cap space or players to do something like both.

Championship teams, ones that actually contend, NEED a superstar or ungodly chemistry/coaching. We don't have those things right now and Whiteside, even when healthy, is not the kind of player that is gonna lead you to the championship as the superstar of a team.

What we have are a bunch of solid players that are almost in entirely different developmental stages and awkwardly combined player strengths/weaknesses.

Guys like Winslow, Richardson, and Johnson are another season or two away from being championship pieces, much less studs.

Wade is on the end of his career. He's still capable of being the best player, on the floor, for stretches and he'd unbelievably clutch but he's not at a time where he can be the primary playmaker and carry the scoring load for a championship team consistently.

Whiteside is awkward. He's not nearly as young as our other guys but a lot of his biggest flaws come from things that you typically get from experience and time in the league. He's probably in or near his physical prime but he's nowhere near his prime as a scorer or defender but are we gonna bet the farm that Whiteside will grasp the IQ and motor side of things consistently? Will he do it and manage to stay uninjured? Not only all of that but do you see Whiteside as a piece that you can build a championship team around because that's what you're signing him for if we're keeping him till 30. He's not a "project" like Winslow or Richardson.

Then you got Dragic. We traded two firsts for him. He's capable of winning you games but he's also the kind of player that requires a roster and personnel investment but he's also aging. He has to be given keys to the offense and told he can run it how sees fit. Even when he was hot, you can still tell that Wade was running the show. Dragic needs spacing from the forwards and a good playmaking PG that can find him when he plays off ball.

I think we gotta have a hard look at how we want to go. Winslow, Richardson, and Bumpy are great, versatile talents that can play in multiple systems so it's time to decide what we really want from this team.

I think if we're building for the future, Whiteside's a big part of that future. We were one game away from reaching the ECF, without two of our bigs. I honestly think were a piece or two away from being a 60-win team who could make a finals run. We beat a 52-win team with a 6'7 rookie playing at center. And we can't get rid of Wade, so we might as well gun for the title and quick rebuild.

What we need is to run an actual offensive system and not just running isolations and the occasional post up. This team almost never has more than one person moving without the ball

it's comedy how everybody goes from loving to hating hassan just like that. did you guys see how badly the raps killed us on the glass in game 7?.....unless we're getting a guy who can provide hassans impact we need to keep him at all costs. our teams struggles came from having a weak offense. the Hornets exposed us. their whole game plan revolved around hassan. throwin multiple bodies at him. we need to get some shooting to make sure that's not possible anymore.

it's sad though. no matter who we get, we're gonna go through the same ugly offensive droughts next season because spo still has no idea how to create an offense that suits his personnel. it was the same when we had the best player in the world and it'll be the same going forward. when teams forced us into the half court spo panicked. we only made it out of the first round cause wade went God mode. most of the time it looks like the team is just freestyling out there. cutting is not a requirement, it's an option. passing the ball is an option. hassan just runs around like a chicken with its head cut off setting screens for everybody. we're not winning anything unless we have a real identity on offense. Spo's obviously not getting fired so I'm not sure what the options are. the guy has been coaching for 8 years and has shown no major improvement in his offensive schemes. we need an offensive coordinator in the worst way.

MORE ON WHITESIDE

We'll tackle several Heat summer issues over the coming days, including this from my newspaper column Sunday:

There will be considerable debate inside the Heat over the next six weeks about how much to offer Hassan Whiteside when free agency begins July 1.

The Heat values him but someone who has spoken to the team's front office said he believes the Heat will try to convince him to take something less than the max deal he almost assuredly could get elsewhere.

(Whether the Heat will go to the max, if Whiteside balks at something less, remains to be seen. And of course, all this is moot if the Heat can sign Kevin Durant, which is Miami's No. 1 priority in free agency. If Miami can sign Durant, keeping Whiteside becomes highly unlikely. That's why the Heat needs a read on Durant before it can move forward with Whiteside.)

Whatever Miami decides to offer Whiteside (and that’s undetermined), the good news is that NBA rules allow Miami to pay Whiteside more than any other team can give him.

What’s more, even if the Heat doesn’t offer Whiteside the max (and it has the cap space to do so), a deal close to the max would earn more money for Whiteside over the next four years than a max deal with other teams would, in most cases.

Here’s why:

• Though both the Heat and other teams can offer Whiteside a contract of no more than four years, the Heat (because it has his Early Bird rights but not his full Bird rights) can offer annual 7.5 percent raises over his first year salary, whereas other teams can offer only 4.5 percent annual raises, cap expertLarry c00n told us two weeks ago.

The first-year max salary for Whiteside will depend on the final cap number and could fall between $21.6 million (c00n’s estimate) and $23 million. If it’s $21.6 million, the Heat could offer Whiteside a four-year, $96.1 million contract; other teams could offer no more than $92 million over four years.

If it’s a $23 million first-year max, the Heat could offer $102.32 million over four years; others teams could offer no more than $98.17 million over four years.

• Only seven states don’t have a state income tax, and only five NBA teams play in those states (the Heat, Magic, Spurs, Mavericks and Rockets). Residents of Tennessee also get some relief, but it's not as black-and-white as the seven other states, according to published tax laws. So those five teams in Florida and Texas can realistically pay players more than others.

During Carmelo Anthony’s 2014 free agency, SI.com broke down how much Anthony could make (after taxes) by signing with the Knicks and Heat. Remember that Anthony could sign for five years with New York, only four with Miami.

If only the first four years were calculated, the Knicks could have paid Anthony $99.9 million, compared with $95.9 million for the Heat. But once taxes were factored in, Anthony would have pocketed more with the Heat over those first four years ($55.3 million) than with the Knicks ($51.6 million) even though the Knicks were paying him $4 million more in salary!

And with Whiteside, the difference in income would be even more pronounced between what he would earn with the Heat and what he would earn in states with high income taxes, because unlike with Anthony, the Heat would be the team with the ability to offer 7.5 percent annual raises, compared with 4.5 percent for others.

So if Miami tries to persuade Whiteside to sign for less than the max, expect the Heat to point all of the aforementioned to Whiteside and agent Sean Kennedy.

Because Whiteside doesn’t have full Bird rights, the Heat has to fit his salary under the cap unless he takes 104.5 percent of the league average salary (about $6.5 million). And he’s not taking 104.5 percent of the league's average; his market value is obviously far above that.

A friend says Whiteside, who’s a bargain at $981,348 this season, likes it here and reveres Pat Riley. The question is this: Will that, the larger percent annual raises and lack of state tax be enough to sway Whiteside if Miami’s offer is several million dollars less that what he can get elsewhere.

Incidentally, opponents shot 54 percent from less than five feet against the Heat when Whiteside was on the court this season, 58.9 otherwise. That 54 percent was better than every starting center expect Tim Duncan, Andrew Bogut and Rudy Gobert.

In the playoffs, opponents shot 53.5 percent within four feet and 30.9 percent from five to 9 feet with Whiteside on the court, 55.2 and 48.7 otherwise. And that doesn’t even take into account the shots Whiteside’s presence discourages opponents from taking.

:ehh:......I think we might have a good shot getting hassan under the max.

Le batard said today they expect Bosh to play next year :snoop: and they're going after KD
im glad we are going after KD. he is the player we need. a true bonifide scorer that will command the attention of the defenses. i also dont get how we are going to let Bosh keep playing. then when he gets blood clots for the third straight year, & damn near risk his life. Pat & them will come out & say we shouldnt have let him play blah blah blah. sounds like a very dumb & bad decision.

but if they do that, plus with Bosh still playing. does that mean no Whiteside for us? :lupe:

This has been the issue since he was hired and will be it until he's gone. 8 years in and he has no sets drawn up to get easy looks for Wade and he took multiple years to learn what the hell to do with LeBron of all people

There's no point for us to keep bringing up KD in this thread at least for this offseason because it doesn't make sense right now.
KD is more than likely going to sign a 1 year deal and then test free agency next year when the cap goes up even more AND it's the last year on Westbrook's deal so they'll test free agency together

i agree it is a mistake. i wouldnt want to risk Boshs life for a dumb game.

why do people keep saying dont bring up KD? If Pat wants him im sure hell find a way. & if Lebatard is saying Pat will go after him, then we can talk about it. because it is a possibility. sure it might be a slight one but its still a possibility.
