we're not talking about multiple genres. we're talking about r&b. do you know how silly you sound right now? devante barely released any rap tracks, and i wouldnt be surprised if he doesnt even listen to pop music. are we gonna hold that against him too?

timbo been wanting to produce a jay album for years. jay wasnt really trying to do it for obvious reasons. as for volume 3, the only timbo track on there that made any noise was "big pimpin".

and no, his resume doesnt hold up. youre just rambling off a bunch of names. ask yourself this, how many of these songs are still held up in high-regard or even mentioned today? i dont even remember some of these.

If we just limit this R&B, Devante's most timeless work is his work with Jodeci vs. Timbaland's most timeless work with Aaliyah and Ginuwine. Of the two, Tim's work with Aaliyah and Ginuwine is the production that's hailed as changing the sound of R&B and pushing it forward. On top of this, Timbaland sustained a career of nearly 20 years in which he's still very relevant vs. Devante's run of '92-'96. How do you justify Devante being >>>>>> Timbaland outside of the one you personally prefer.

As far as Tim not producing a Jay album, Tim never produced a Jay album for the same reasons that Jay never let one producer produce an entire album for him. I guess DJ Premier, Ski, Just Blaze, Kanye, and all the other talented producers he's worked with never entirely produced a Jay album for "obvious reasons" as well.

As far as "Big Pimpin", it was a single as opposed to the other Timbo productions on the album. Not only was it a single, it's one of the biggest songs Jay Z ever released. How were any of the other songs supposed to compete with that?

Look up Timbaland's production discography vs. Devante's production discography and see if I'm just rambling off names. A lot of those songs are still held in high regard and mentioned today. You not remembering =/= every other R&B listener not remembering them. It seems like you're the one that's rambling.

timbaland's work with ginuwine & aalyiah was just a continuation of the devante/bassment stuff. turn off your tv homie.

quality >>> quantity. 20 years of timbaland, and barely any of his stuff is held in the same regard as devante's '92-96 run........but then again, ive had similar arguments about that with you regarding numerous other artists, so im not even gonna waste my time anymore. youre never gonna get it.

timbaland was pushing hard to produce a jay album. thats the difference.

where did i compare "big pimpin" to those other vol 3 tracks?

What does Timbaland's work being a continuation of Da Bassment have to do with anything? Unless you're implying that Devante is behind the work on those albums (despite Ginuwine and Aaliyah crediting and claiming Timbaland produced them), what's your point? Nobody's denying the influence and impact Devante/Da Bassment had on Timbaland's career, but to say just because Devante influenced/impacted Timbaland's career means that he's better is ludicrous.

There's a clear difference between what Timbaland's production sounds like vs. Devante. Yes, he created a lot of that music while he was a member of Da Bassment, but does that take away from the quality. They were still his productions. It was still his sound.

If it's quality over quantity, Timbaland has 20 years of quality as opposed to five or six. Timbaland's music is possibly held in higher regard than anything Devante produced. We're talking The Bachelor and One In A Million. That's not counting songs outside of those albums like Aaliyah's "Are You That Somebody" and "Try Again". Throw sales, chart positions, etc. out of the window and you still have songs and albums that changed R&B music therefore it's held in higher regard than what Devante was doing.

I've read all of these articles years ago. I've listened to the demo tapes that came out of Da Bassment. I've watched the documentaries of both Missy Elliott and Timbaland.

A lot of producers that Jay's worked with have pushed to produce a Jay album.

You compared "Big Pimpin'" to those other Vol. 3 songs by stating that it was the only Timbo track on it that made noise.

What does that have to do with Timbaland's R&B production though? You're implying that he stole a sound and gave it away. That's not the case. Everybody knows he was a member of Da Bassment (as was many of the artists that he ended up producing for). Again, Ginuwine, Missy, Playa, and Tweet (from Sugah) could've easily went the way of Devante, Stevie J., and Darryl Pearson. Why did they choose Tim? On top of that Playa wasn't only a singing and songwriting collective, they could also produce, but still rode with Tim despite having other options. In fact, the original version of The Bachelor was produced by Darryl Pearson with only one song produced by Tim, why did he have Tim re-do the whole thing and not go to Stevie J., Darryl, or Devante?

I'm not implying that at all. I'm only pointing out that the sound he made his name off of was from Da Bassment. DeVante's beef with Tim, according to former members in the camp, claim DeVante didn't want Tim using that sound to make his name off in the industry. He would have preferred if Tim did something different or more original but he didn't, although that style was original to the industry, people in the camp were familiar...obviously.
To answer your second question, we already know what happened. They chose Tim because he was more reliable and had that energy to create a wave in the music industry at the time. It wasn't that he had more talent than DeVante or a better producer. DeVante lost his aura, his edge, became abusive and controlling for reasons beyond music.
In response to your third question, see response to question two.

And again, what is it a knock against him if he made a name for himself off of a sound from Da Bassment? I would understand if these were Devante's productions that Timbaland was making a name off of, but these are still productions that Timbaland made. A lot of the artists that Timbaland produced were Bassment artists, were they not? What about them (Missy, Ginuwine, Playa, and Tweet)?

I mean, if Timbaland didn't use the sound, it's not like we were ever going to hear it otherwise considering the gems that are on that Bassment demo alone.

If DeVante lost his aura and edge, it speaks volumes. It separates those with potential to those that are great. When we look at DeVante it's what he possibly could've/would've been if... With Timbaland, there's not an "if". We're essentially comparing a producer who was able to keep it together for a great five year run vs. a producer who was able to keep it together for a great 20 year run. Both producers have produced classics, but what separates the two is that Timbaland is a producer that's consistently produced classic music for 20 years as opposed to five. Ginuwine has stated that Timbaland is the greatest producer as far as he's concerned (during the time, he said he didn't even like Tim as a person). He's worked with every producer in Da Bassment. That says a lot.

"There are great producers out here, but I still feel there’s no one that can touch Tim or his power regardless of whether we work together or what we may have went through in the past. The truth is the truth. No one can see Timbaland when it comes to producing."---- Ginuwine

 @ the bolded.

im sure producers push for albums all the time, but timbo was pushing hard for years.

and no, i didnt compare "big pimpin" to timbo's other productions on volume 3. YOU DID THAT. NOT ME. i simply said that the only timbo beat on there that was poppin like that was big pimpin.

You can laugh all you want, but I don't see you disputing it. "Music was boring until he came out with that new sound. Back then, I would have described it as futuristic because it was something that had not been done and people jumped on it. If it wasn’t for him making that style as hot as it is, a lot of producers that’s out now maybe wouldn’t even be here"---- Ginuwine (who worked with Devante, Stevie J., and Darryl Pearson).

Ginuwine wasn't exactly Timbo's homie when he made the statement. In the same article, he goes on to say that he didn't like Timbaland. Yes, Timbo was producing for him, but Ginuwine was also a member of Da Bassment, which means he wasn't only cool with Tim, but also DeVante and the other producers. I don't see how what I posted is random. It pertains to what I posted previously since you think I'm just pulling information out of the sky for the sake of argument. It's not changing history, if it's documented (not only by the artists Tim's worked with, but many credit Timbaland with changing R&B).

That's funny because I heard he was the one DeVante would treat the worst in the camp. Apparently he gave Ginuwine the beats all the time and I know ya'll remember that story where they say DeVante caught him with another dude in a hotel room.
But yeah no surprise who he rolled and repped for.

Are nikkas really in here trying to say doing great production for one group over the course of 3 years >>>> almost 20 years for various artists across various genres?

:heh: Amazing.

Yes, that appears to be what's happening here and that's really my whole argument.

Since when did 3-5 years of great work become >>>>> than almost 20 even if DeVante was Timbaland's mentor? The student definitely surpassed the teacher.
