all of the countries he advocated for are independent now, the civil rights era happened, we’ve had black presidents and politicians. Mind you, during his time there functionally no elected black officials during the Nadir of Race Relations post-reconstruction.

So, what would he try to be successful at?

I'm pretty sure he was misogynist and homophobic by todays standards
That's the underrated part of being a "black leader" now. You have a certain criteria to be accepted by "black twitter" and a different one to be accepted by "militants" and that's not even considering whatever c00ns, dem shills and other blacks with agendas that will undermine and discredit you

He would struggle more.

Think about why he linked up with the KKK. His failure to understand that Africans in the diaspora built their homes elsewhere, after giving up blood, sweat and tears, would be his undoing.

yeah he would've been successful, and if you've read his work you'd understand why.

he wasn't running around with some pie in the sky dream of returning to africa. he was trying to establish a base for Black people throughout the world because he foresaw exactly what we're living thru today. he knew white people would develop to a point scientifically where they'd be able to kill us off without us even knowing how they're doing it (medical apartheid).

he also foresaw a time where governments were going to have to make hard decisions on where crucial resources would go, and he knew white gov'ts, along with the asians and latins, were always and forever going to take care of their own first and foremost.

he knew we were a defenseless people, and that we were going to go thru some very turbulent times if we didn't get it together.

There would be less opposition from the govt today.
Don't ever believe that. That man would face every bit as much opposition from governments all over the world today, as he did back then.

Any serious Black man or woman that garners the attention and support of the masses and is talking about getting up from under the white man and forging our own path will be seen as a threat to be neutralized.

Above the fray.

I used to think that, but I've since come to believe that Economic interests of big business played a bigger factor in the targeting/takedown of Garvey than what I factored.

Society was structured with laws/policy to block Black people from job and career opportunities. When the govt. passed restrictive immigration act in 1924, it limited the amount of poor white immigrants coming into the country from certain regions. The Black people were routed into the industries and jobs open as the country blocked the white immigrants who previously occupied those spots.

Garvey and UNIA rise roughly corresponds with the first decade of the Great Migration. Economy (Northern industry) couldn't operate without the labor and the consumers of goods.

Country that wouldn't protect the rights and freedoms of her Black citizens, would otherwise be happy or ambivalent about their departure.
