Would John Stockton be a top 3 PG today? Huge debate going on

Yea, one thing that doesn't get talked about was Stockton on top of being a skilled PG was a really good athlete, on top of that while he was a good scorer as opposed to great, he was very efficient and he was a great at stealing and passing in transition and did in an era were it was harder to do so.

With how athletic guards and other big men are in the league in 2022, I suspect Stockton might also get pick and rolled to death -- pardon the irony of that statement.

Absolutely, Stockton was a plus defender in his era. I'm just not sure he would be as effective now.
I think the speed of the game now would limit Stockton's effectiveness.

The top guards today are either lights out from 3 big or athletic or big and athletic and Stockton is none of the 3. Chris Paul isn’t either but Paul has showed he can win with anyone and he’s better than Stockton.

Charles Barkley is on the record praising Stockton's skills as a point guard when they were on the Dream Team.
He implied that Malone benefitted more from playing with Stock than the other way around.

Dont know about top 3 in today's era because there are some superstars playing PG in 2022, but Stock would hold his own. They would have to guard him also

It's a very tough comparison

In 2020 being able to defend the PNR is basically mandatory to get on the floor whereas in his day plenty of starters weren't being coached on PNR defense

In 2020 the lack of illegal defense rule changes makes it easier to defend Stockton style


I think Stockton with Pedo Malone would be an all star

But I don't believe that Stockton by himself is an all star, I don't think he could lead a crappy team to contention the way Steph, CP3, Luka and Dame have done in the past

Edit: I don't think he'd be better on offense than Trae Young. So no I don't think he'd be top 3

Stockton is top 50 all time in scoring. He scored when he wanted. Dude is a point guard’s point guard.
