So, I joined 小紅書 (xiaohingshu) Little Red Book aka RedNote and as suspected, Chinese government censorship applies to users overseas.
I shared one of my favorite pieces by artist Tristan Eaton that I came across last year at Comic-Con and it was immediately flagged with a “note violation”. You can see the notice very subtly on the top when you expand the image.
Also, I used hashtags that I would use on other social media sites but they’re disable and not hyperlinked. Except for #June4 but when you click on that hyperlink it takes you to an error page.
Also there’s no ability to share links out. So it’s basically a walled garden that lets foreign users join (at the moment) but subjected to Chinese government censorship rules.
I lived a number of years in China and traveled often enough for the last 2 decades to know what a censored life feels like. I don’t need that while overseas.
So as suspected, it’s going to be impossible to have fully self-expressed conversations with Chinese people in China via this app. But it’ll be really easy for the Chinese government to push their propaganda outwards to the naive “TikTok refugees”.
Will keep exploring for as long as my account is valid.
