Em was upset about Will Smith’s speech at the 1998 MTV Video Music Awards, where he said, “See? I got a successful album, and I didn’t have to curse off or talk about violence.” Em felt personally dissed by the comment

I used to respect Will Smith. [Now] he’s dissed the whole genre of rap. He dissed gangsta rap music. And that is one of the most influential musics out there…Not everybody sees life as happy and as positive as he sees it.

Eminem personally had the edited version of this song make loud beep noises when he says “fukk” in these two lines; most edited versions go silent to make the censorship less noticeable. He wanted to make censoring music look as ridiculous as he can.

DJ Jazzy Jeff recently shed some light on how where this Em/Will mini-beef all started. Apparently Jazz played Em’s twisted version of Will’s “Just the Two of Us”, and Will made a comment that Em didn’t take too kindly to. So Em felt the need to respond to Will not just to stick up for the genre of gangsta rap, but for himself personally.

Will wasn’t too offended, although he did make a casual reference to the diss on “Mr. Niceguy”. But don’t you find it ironic that Will curses in films but not in his music?

Yes. I remember making a thread about that on Boxden one time and everybody acted like I was fukking stupid for calling out his hypocrisy.

Em destroyed him

I'll always take the successful black man over the psychotic white boy, though. Marshall is fiery, and the one thing you never want to do is get on his radar, that's true. Will was never about battle rapping, though, so that's not really an even fight.

I still don't think it's right that Marshall has an Oscar before Will. As for Will cussing in his movies, I don't remember his profanities. I just know that when Will takes a role, he owns that role body and soul. He's always been very careful about the roles he takes on, and the type of legacy he wants to pass down through his image; he never takes a role just because the rent is due.

I won't co-sign Marshall on this one, because there's too much going on in the background with Will.

Em got Best Original Song for 'Lose Yourself'. It's not an acting Oscar, but it's still an Oscar; and white reception of 8 Mile always made me feel some type of way. :yeshrug: It's hard to express. Three Six Mafia ain't performing and winning at the Oscars, without Marshall making it 'okay'. Besides, Will's boycott of the Grammys a decade before was a political statement, while Marshall was merely apathetic towards his Oscar nomination. Will's road has always been harder than Marshall's, in spite of Will being middle class and Marshall being white trash. I don't automatically co-sign Marshall's diss of Will, precisely because of the tighter navigation Will has had to be on.

After Earth was Scientology getting to Will, which is too bad because when was the last time any of us saw a mainstream movie which celebrated black fatherhood and the role strong black fathers can have in molding their sons into become successful young men? Let alone in a sci-fi setting, where blacks only exist to die. Yes, Will's character was dead, but his words of wisdom and ability to teach his son were very much alive. Besides, Will phoning it in is still 10 times the acting that most actors give us (and I still think Will made the right decision not to do Tarantino's Django).

And I don't care what anyone says, I loved Jaden in the new Karate Kid and think some of the hatred coming towards him is the same type of boy jealousy Justin Bieber gets. Leaving their personal lives out of it, both of them do have some skills.
