because more people have Cable and DVD Players and would rather wait....why do you think so many movies end up recouping or earning profit when they are released on dvd to buy or when there rights are sold for broadcast
so what if the Hobbit sold less than the trilogy..lots of movie sequels and prequels have made less than the original
doesnt mean the industry is in danger..blockbusters are not in fear, have you even seen whats planned on deck for the next two years
I said in the next 20 years, not 2 or 3. I think with technology advancing the industry is in danger. The fact they have to keep upping the prices to keep up with Attendances shows this. The fact people have more options to watch their movies makes me feel we could see the downfall sooner rather then later. Also DVD/Bluray sales are down too by the way. Me personally I love the theater experience but I'm not surprised that I have more friends that say, "I'll wait for DVD" then I ever had before.
Given the choice to watch a movie like Django, The Avengers, or Dark Knight Rises at home or in the theater im going to the theater every time.
People are naturally social human beings so no I doubt it.
Unless technology replaces taking your girl to the movies as an easy, relatively inexpensive date, it's never going away.
dvd/blu ray sales are down because they raised the prices of movie new released...4 years ago you could buy a new release for 12.99-14.99 the first week, now they're on sale for 19.99 so people do not buy like they used to, why you dont see hundreds of copies of movies anymore..people will wait
you keep saying upping prices..theaters are NOT owned by the studios, theyre either franchises or independatly owned and operated..THEY set the prices
you say $17 to see a 3D, I have a theater by me thats $7 for matinee 3D and 12 for regular, the only time I spent 17 is for IMAX
you dont like the price drive to another theater or watch a movie before 5
and with technology advancing people are not going to stay away, its the opposite, theyll check it out
This is the reason why I havent even seen the recent Batman movies. missed my chance to see them in theatres and there not really at home watching movies in my opinion (Im not a big fan of superhero movies and comics).
The experience of watching a movie in a theatre just cant be replicated. Im glad I saw Django in theatres imo it made it that much better (especially when Ross 100 Coffins joint came on ).
Look at Avatar...there is no reason to watch that movie if you aint watch it in theatres (3d). The storyline is some shyt that we've seen and read a million times. It was the whole cinematic experience and 3D that made it dope.
Going to a movie, club/bar/concert, sporting event are like American pastimes that probably wont ever see a decline.
dude.....what u don't get is that technology is improving exponentially and that before long you'll be able to replicate the experience of being at the movies from you couch
immersive 3D technology is just coming online right now.....it'll first explode in the gaming with the next gen consoles but before long it should impact all scopes of entertainment
imagine being able to experience being in madison square garden being surrounded by thousands of people watching the knicks play from the comfort of your couch?
that is where technology is heading
Movie theaters are just the beginning. I think watching live sports as well as live concerts will also become a thing of the past. We are heading toward a society that will be online much more than being out there in the "real world" as the "virtual world" becoming more real.
You made my point for me. Studios makes deals with theater chains. By cutting out the theater chains they will save more money by going straight to the consumer. As for paying 17 for 3D, hey I'm in NYC it's an expensive city. But ask the average family how much they pay for to go to the movies. It's expensive. I willing to say if you did a poll, a Large percentage of people would say they would be just fine watching Big Screen new releases on their On Demand without going to the theater.
