Will God die out once we attain immortality?

As crazy as it sounds we might be the generation that lives to see the day when "natural causes" or "disease" cease to be causes of death for humans. Even if you don't buy Ray Kurweil's theory that we might be able to upload our brains into computers thus making our consciousness immortal, biotechnology and genetics should be able to RADICALLY increase longevity.

My question is simple. Does belief in God require our potential mortality? If we are able to conquer death, doesn't that make belief in religion/God unnecessary?

I've always believed that the main reason humans created God/religion is because of our fear of death. Because we can't comprehend the annihilation of our consciousness, we created the euphemism of God and the afterlife. I believe that once we are able to stop aging, cure all disease, and make it possible to live indefinitely in a healthy manner, that belief in God will end.

We are already seeing this. Outside of America, in most advanced Western countries, the number of atheists outnumbers those who are practicing Christians. The number of people who don't believe in God is also increasing among those who are younger. I think we are close to the day when formal religion and belief in God ends.

By the year 2100, belief in God will be the equivalent of what believing in Ghosts is today. Only the fringe elements of society will believe such a farce.

Human immortality is hell. Say someone locks you in a box and buries you underground. Would you want to be immortal?

The flesh will never be immortal and robots will always need a source of power. There is only 1 form of immortality and thats in the bosom of The Almighty, God.

Humanity
mortality is one of the characteristics that defines being human.
we will never free ourselves of our finite existence.
however, i can see us lengthening our life spans and greatly increasing the quality of it.
within 4 generations we have already seen this happen.

nuclear fusion = infinite source of unlimited power

a robot body with human consciousness inside the harddrive and a nuclear fusion battery = immortal

immortality would be a disaster for this planet, and our species

how come?

you act like we haven't already been destroying the planet and each other

in fact immortality might actually get us to care about the planet and take care of it because we won't just be leaving our mess for later generations to fix.....we would be leaving a mess for ourselves thus we would practice more self-restraint in our excess

dying by age 30 also used to be a characteristic that defined our species 100,000 years ago

if there is one thing that has been true about the human species since our inception is that we have continually exceeded our physical limits.....it started with stone tools being used to tear flesh rather than our teeth......and its now using internet to communicate with everyone else on earth rather than having to talk face to face......whose to say that in the future mortality itself will also go out the window just like all the other limits we have surpassed

As long as its possible, I'm sure it will be done. Maybe Kurzweil and others are wrong and our generation might not live to see when immortality is achieved. But I'm fully convinced that if our species continues to exist, it will one day do it.

Never underestimate the power of human ingenuity. :blessed:

We will always ask questions immortality or not.

While you believe that God came about from the fear of death I believe God is there for our curiosity of what existed before and how the universe came to be.

By the year 2100 agnosticism will reign supreme and atheism will become a rarity.

You're really talking about the same thing here. Most atheists don't proclaim "there is no god/gods". They just see no convincing reason to assume there is a god/gods.

Atheism is the rejection of belief no matter what way you word it.

Therefore they are proclaiming that there are no god/gods by simply being atheist.

Thank You. I'm an atheist and agnostic. It just depends on what the question is.

1. Do you believe in God? Answer: No, I am an atheist about belief in God. Its sort of impossible to be agnostic about the question of belief. You either believe or you don't.

2. Do I know God does not exist? Answer: No, I am an agnostic about the existence of God. I don't know if God exists. God might exist or he might not. All I know is that I have yet to see credible evidence in support of the existence of a God.

The difference between atheist/agnostics like myself and religious folks is that I don't claim to know anything with certainty. Its religous folks who claim to not only know God, but also they know his name, how he created the universe, and when, who, and how we can fukk. :steviej: That is the difference.

Fusion is not unlimited or infinite. If that was the case, stars would never die. Just pointing that out.

reading comprehension bro

belief and knowledge don't always go hand in hand

for example I don't believe that we have been visited by aliens even though there are many people who claim to have been abducted.......so with regard to whether I believe aliens have visited earth I am an atheist.......however I do not claim that to know with 100% certainty that aliens have NEVER visited earth.......so if you ask me if I know that aliens have not visited earth.......I would say I am an agnostic to the question of whether I know if they have visited earth.......I just know that I have never seen credible evidence to change my belief

knowing and believing are very different things......you can't get it because if you believe in God the two go hand in hand.......you not only believe but you also claim to know
